I read the books and I'll admit that I was swept away into the Eric fantasy and can't wait for the show to start flirting with the idea a lot more. But that's the idea - to help the audience to relate to Sookie's conflict and that ever-present battle between the heart and the head. We need to be reminded that Sookie is totally new to this relationship stuff and that she can still be easily manipulated and has hormones that are not always in control. And Eric's not always in control, either...

Lafayette is a much stronger character on the show than in the 1st book and I think that fans loved him so much that the writers couldn't kill him off. In the books, Eric helps Sookie to find Lafayette's killer. So I'm assuming that they had to do something to write around that plot line, now that Lafayette's not murdered. I can't imagine how they'd get away with including Bubba on the show, as readers were left to imagine (and laugh out loud) at that character in the book. I don't understand why they reduced Chow to the role of buttoned-up Asian businessman, rather than the more exotic, scary, tatooed badass, unless they wanted to distinguish him more from Long Shadow. I LOVELOVELOVE what they've done with Pam, but she should be closer in physical age to Sookie.

I totally agree! Eric's a little bit rude and might take advantage of his power as Sheriff but nothing like what they portray in the show. This season sucks...The books are awesome they need to stick more to the main storyline. I'm soooo disapointed with what they've done with the manaud character also. The only thing I like that was different was that Lafayette didn't die. Depending on what they do with that story could change my mind though.

Lis...In the books there is no difference. Unfortunatley the show doesn't really show Sookies changes after drinking Bill's blood. She feels way stronger her hairs is blonder and more bouncy and she even looks more radiant. They dont talk about any of the psychedelics that Jason has in the book though.

Love love love the books and I am looking forward to the triangle that Bill, Sookie and Eric present but if I'm remembering right, Book 2 was still about Sookie and Bill's relationship. Eric doesn't start becoming a real love interest for Sookie until either 3 or 4.

I agree with ZZ. I have read the books but I love the way AB has crafted the series. The fun is in the surprises. If he followed the book exactly, it would probably not come off as good anyway. When I have read a book first, I am rarely happy with the screen adaptation. A perfect example of this is Harry Potter's "Order of the Phoenix". That book was huge and should have been a two part movie. The time allotted barely covered the basics.

In reading the Sookie books, I got tired of everything being filtered through Sookie. The series lets the viewer experience the other character's pov. And I must say the books came off like a bait and switch to me. Bill and Sookie were in love. Problems happened but the turning point came when the author seemed to decide Eric was to be the hero rather than Sookie's first love. It felt off to me and Eric was devious about luring Sookie away from Bill.

For me the series is a validation of my love for Bill and Sookie. Eric is fascinating and a great character but so far, I would never replace Bill with Eric. Bill has more of a human feel than Eric does.

Overall I think AB had done a brilliant job of giving viewers a treat with each and every episode of True Blood. Can't wait for July 12th.

I have read the books. I'm for Bill all the way.
I think Eric is manipulative and i don't believe him at all.
I like Eric in the show, so far.

Yes it is so true that the portrayal of Eric is so estranged from the books....it is just so disappointing. Though it is well noted the show would deviate from the book but seems when it hits season 2 it is just way too off.
And I can't agree more with Holly that everyone who read the books love Eric and he is the one who really cares about Sookie and saves her from all sorts of crisis. I hope AB will come along this line sooner or later...

eric views lafayette, and all humans, as a thing or something to be used. he doesn't really mess around with anyone that isn't going to be valuable to him and often uses his seduction skills to get what he wants. clearly that's turned out to be a winning strategy. lafayette is industrious, probably pretty well connected and attractive, so he fits the bill.

as far as eric's desire for him...personally, i love the sexual ambiguity. it's far more interesting. i mean come on, the guy's 1,000 years old and i'm sure he's had alot of trim in that time! i'd imagine by now he's past picking a team and just goes for whatever tastes good.

It makes me sad to watch this season of true blood... any one who reads the books will tell you that Eric is one of their favorite characters... and in the show they are making him out to be a bad guy - how frustrating! I understand they want to change it up from the book.. but really they are screwing with the story to much for my taste.
