News Roundup: Anna is “Hardcore”, True Blood’s Deeper Implications, Ryan Shoots GQ

It’s time for another True Blood news roundup!

  • Stephen Moyer tells Access Direct TV magazine (via People) that he’s the one who got Anna Paquin into boxing: “I like the sport and she likes the blood. I’m like, ‘Stop the fight, people are getting hurt, I can’t bear it!’ and she’s going, ‘Go on, hit ‘em!’ She loves it. She boxes too.” Stephen adds, “My girl is hardcore!”
  • Ben Scarlato, an intern at the Institute of Ethics & Emerging Technology, takes a look at True Blood from a transhumanist perspective and brings up some interesting points. For example, what if we had the technology to read each other’s minds, like Sookie can? What are the implications of knowing people’s thoughts vs. seeing their actions? And, specifically relating to True Blood, was Bill justified in killing Uncle Bartlett because he had impure thoughts toward young Sookie, even though he never acted on them?
  • On a lighter note, Ryan Kwanten will appear in an upcoming spread in GQ magazine. Just Jared has some photos of Ryan leaving the photoshoot.

He’s a bit late to the game (Ben Scarlato) We in the forum have been discussing ethical questions in the forum for months now. We have discussed everything from Bill’s humanity to the subtexts of True Blood (prejudice, discrimination) to the moral grey area that Bill’s having killed Uncle Bartlett exists in.

About True Blood, Bill killing Uncle Bartlett, good question. He is very “tuned in” to her.You knew something was up when you look at his reaction. Was he righting a wrong that he felt had been made or was there more to this than that. Sookie was upset,I’m not sure because he did kill him or because she told him in trust and maybe she felt he broke that trust. Will this be something he might come to wish he hadn’t done, will sookie not trust him to tell him anything elsa?I’m torn in two on this because i can see from his view point, yes this needed to be done & i can see from her view point,no it didnt because she told him not thinking he would do this. Trust once broken can be hard to get back in place. Time will tell if this was a wise move or not.

Late to the game? I enjoyed his article and I appreciate his insights. I don’t see this as a competition. I enjoy watching a show that resonates on many different levels. While it is true that it is an adult “soap opera” (and oh so fun),it is the many layers of True Blood that will keep fans like me coming back for more.

It is good to see Stephen and Anna enjoying themelves outside of the show.
The Bill and the Uncle Bartlett Issue. Killing is never a good thing or is truly justified. Even though we know Bill to originally be a good and honest man, it has been 140 years since he was a man. Vampire Justice as mentioned by Eric, is much different than what we are accustomed to. Should Bill have done it? No, but it was the only way he has known, for so long, to enact justice for the wrong done to the woman he now loves. I think we will see a wonderful journey here, of the road to humanity, for Bill, with the help of the love he feels for Sookie. Along this road they will have their spats and we will still see Bills Vampire temper, and Sookie will have to adjust to the new supernatural world, she now is a part of, but thats also what makes the show so wonderful. Of course there is the makeup sex, which is always great.
There is so much possibility in this show. I am hoping the writers see that when they develop the story line more. So far it has been amazing.
    Thanks HBO and Alan Ball!

Do we know for a fact that Uncle Bartlett never touched Sookie? I can’t say I wouldn’t have the same feelings or actions if someone did that to my child, it’s a fine line to walk on & this is a long held debate as Aslinn mentioned.

  6. True Blood Fan says:

I know the show is not the books and perhaps it is not as spelled out as the books but I believe Sookie does say that Uncle Bartlett did touch her although they did not show it in a flash back. I thought the flashback was all you needed to imply what happend next.

  7. Carol says:

Uncle Bartlett definitely molested Sookie – it is spelled out in both the books and the show. And in the books, she’s glad he’s dead.
