HBO Officially Announces True Blood Season 3! (UPDATED)
At the TCA presentation today, HBO officially announced that they’ve picked up True Blood for a third season, set to debut in June 13, 2010. Not that there was any doubt, what with approximately 11 million viewers tuning in each week, but it’s still nice to hear it for certain!

Updated 09.21.09: Judging by the 400+ comments on this thread, True Blood fans aren’t thrilled about waiting until June for the new season. Yes, it does seem like a long time to wait, especially when we’re used to only having a 3-month summer break between seasons on broadcast TV. Let me explain why True Blood is different:
- The hiatus gives Alan Ball & co. time to create a quality show. Unlike broadcast television, shows on premium cable prefer to have all or most of their season “in the can” before the season premiere. Most of True Blood‘s first season had been filmed before it premiered in September 2008 (they shot the season finale the week of the premiere). The premiere of season 2 was moved up to June 2009, which meant they still had 3 episodes to film in addition to all of the promotional appearances, Comic Con, etc. that accompanied season 2. The season finale was completed (post-production) just days before it aired. It must have been exhausting for everyone involved to keep up with the production schedule as well as promotional commitments. By beginning production on season 3 earlier (December 2009) and keeping the premiere date in June, that should allow time to put together the quality show we’ve come to love.
- A long hiatus is NOT a death knell for this show. HBO has proven that if a show is good, the audience will return. Case in point: the hiatus between seasons 1 and 2 was seven months, which allowed additional viewers to discover True Blood and get hooked. As a result, the second season exploded, doubling its ratings and becoming the second highest-rated show ever on HBO. It also became a pop culture phenomenon, grabbing mainstream attention from Newsweek to late night talk shows.
- Long breaks and shorter seasons are becoming more and more accepted on US television. Consider 24 on Fox – it only airs from January-May, meaning there’s a 7-8 month hiatus every year. NBC won’t air the next season of Chuck until January 2010, 8 months after its season finale at the end of April 2009. On cable, it’s normal for a show to air a 12-13 episode season during the summer (i.e. The Closer, Warehouse 13), then take a break for 9 months. This model isn’t new to our international friends who are used to seeing 6-12 episode seasons once every year or so, meaning new content is on year ’round. And on that note, True Blood is not the only original programming on HBO, therefore they must make room for other shows to air.
So, my friends, do not despair about the long wait between seasons. We will not be bombarding HBO with demands to move season 3 earlier, nor will we accept comments calling for that. We will respect the creative process, enjoy the episodes we do have, perhaps re-read (or read for the first time!) the Sookie Stackhouse novels

The first time i watched true blood.. i really felt that this show teach you everything in diff. aspect of our lives. and to the fact that the characters play their roles gracefully.. i know that season 3 of true blood.. is gonna be the best and full of suspense and amazing episodes.. I can’t wait to see it … im so excited and looking forward to watch it .
I think Sookie belongs with Eric. Maybe the books have influenced my decision but that is what I think. Yes Bill does love Sookie, but I think Eric could too. The way he loved Godric, he would love Sookie. Cant wait to see if and when they play out an Eric and Sookie relationship.

I Think that the most wonderful thing about True Blood is Bill’s and Sookies relationship and love for eachother. If they take that away, I will stop watching the show. I haven’t been reading the books so I’m watching purely this show like a any tv serie. I Don’t understand you people, Eric is horrible and not that sexy even…. quite ordinary scandinavian man (his looks) without charisma and honesty, I see then every day. =)
i agree that Sookie and Bill are the most intriguing couple all because of their love, but Eric is also popular for being sexy. I think Eric has appeal because like many characters in True Blood he is a bad boy. Besides all the couples, love and sex going on there are a lot of facinating horror scenes and monsters, a favourite being the biting!

In the books Godric is a pediphile and serial killer. Eris and Sookie’s relationship os more symbiotic than the parasitic relationship that Bill and Sookie share. Eric cares for her, and he shows it in better ways than anyone else. He is so much sweeter in the books. He doesn’t manipulate her in the least. Bill does, and he holds other things higher than her. Eric doesn’t. She is important to him, and even better, she is impportant to him just the way she is.
I agree, I think my thoughts are influenced by the books as well, sookie and Eric have a very very veryyyyyy passionate relationship and I’m so in love with it. Yes bill surely does live sookie but if you just read the books you find out bill is a edging scumbag to her in a huge way! I can’t wait for the tenth book to come out to find out more drama,action,love, and you can’t forget the sexiness… NOT TO MENTION ONLY 89DAYS TILL THE PREMIER!!! woooo. In the books Bill isnt such a truthful guy……Eric and Sookie have this on again off again relationship that is pretty lustfilled…but It seems like he is really caring for her now not just about himself…his character is more interesting in the books. Cannot wait for the release of Dead in the Family in April …last book so far!

I do love the show but NOTHING compares to the books. They change sooooo much in the show. Like the dead body in the first episode of season 2 is supposed to be Lafayette! Tara is supposed to be olive skinned not black. And Jason is Not a mane character like he is. And Lorena is Not mentioned until Book 3(Season 3). There is so much more that I can’t even get into at this time. I understand that you cannot take the books and put them directly on tv. But they should try to keep it closer to the original.
I totally agree with you…the fact that Tara i black was always one of the things that bothered me most. And they’re not as close in the books. Not to mention that Tara is dating a vampire in Club Dead so what are they going to do when that comes up? Because Mickey plays an important role later in the series.
They added and took away characters that should have been there/ were not very important to the plot. Don’t get me wrong I love the show but nothing ever compares to the books. There are very few movies or tv shows that do.
Wow that’s too bad that Tara being bad is what upsets you the most… Most people who work in movies know that when you put a book into a television series you must make it capture the attention of more than just one group (race) of the audience. The same way that they made changes in Twilight. Who cares if Tara is not olive skinned or as light as you think she should be, she plays her role well. That’s the one reason why I love True Blood is because they incorporate different races and ethnities in the series, whether certain people approve or not.
One of the best things about the show TrueBlood is that it is different from the books! You get two GREAT versions of the story, one from the Charlaine Harris’s mind and one from Alan Ball’s mind. I have read every single Sookie book and I love the fact that I know Alan is going to change the story line in such a way that it is surprising with each episode. The drawing away from the book makes each media all the more interesting and fun to compare. I loved the emphasis on Lafaette and Tara being cousins, and the whole delving into Louisiana Backwoods VooDoo, (nothing like that in the books!) I cannot wait to see what changes he makes or if he even includes the were, fairy, and witch societies. Don’t get hung up on the race of a character, that’s just silly.
i think he will HAVE to include all of those societies, as sookie is part fae, no getting away from that one! and when eric gets a spell put on him and he forgets who he is ect… i really don’t think alan would leave that part of the book out as it will make sizzling tv as i’m sure you’ll agree!! which will obviously bring to light witches as it a witch that put a spell on eric in the 1st place! and they have already brought werewolves into in season 3, but how all the stories come 2gether in the series? who knows!! and i can’t wait!!!!!!!

I do understand that the series cannot be the same as the books, and both are individually awesome, but really hope that they incorporate bubba. he has a pretty big role in the books.
Im glad that they didn’t kill lafayette in the T.V series because he has such a big role and i would be so sad if he was gone. the fact that Tara is black makes it better because it makes her character more vibrant and interesting.
i agree with both of ur comments! my friend got me into reading the books, and when she finally saw the series, she was disapointed as it was so much different from the books! i on the other hand, didn’t mind that the series was a different interpretation of the story. it makes it new, fresh and exciting for a fan of the books, well on the whole anyway! but i do agree that they should try and get bubba in there somewhere, as he is important throughout the different books, and also because in a lot of ways he is a very endearing sort of character

My friend got me hooked on True Blood in the middle of Season 1. I immediately got my very own blu-ray copy of the 1st season as soon as it came out and watched all the episodes a ton of times! I don’t have HBO, so I have to watch the episodes on the internet (usually takes about 2 days before it gets uploaded, but I don’t mind). I cannot wait until Season 3. I think it’s gonna be a wild ride for Bill, Sookie and Eric!

I love True Blood! My friend kept talking about it so I went to the Library and got the first seasons series. Wow, what a show. Finally and adult vampire series. This show capataved me so much that I actually watched the whole firs series in a day, that many hours people, but I couldn’t stop.

Oh Ok I love twilight but I also Love True blood. but it is 2 different kind of loves… Twilight series is for TEENS. And True Blood is on HBO for a reason it is for adults . so how do you compare??? i have read all of the sookie stackhouse mysteries, and all of the twilight books, i have yet to read the vampire diaries, but i am watching the series. I think that each of the stories has its good points. i absolutely adore and devour all of the sookie series can’t wait for the next book out in may 2010! she really draws you into her world, it’s like fairy tales for adults!! brilliant! the twilight saga is also good. it may not get you seriously hot under the collar like in book 4 of sookie stackhouse (shower scene with sookie and eric!! extremely hot!!), but it is still very addictive, and i personally do not think that the twilight books are for teeny boppers! as some of the content in the books i feel deals with emotions that the average 10/11 yr old wouldn’t have a clue about! i will not let my daughter read any of the twilight books till she is abot 13/14 at the earliest! and the sookie stackhouse series till she is about 16/17yrs. but i will encourage her to read them, as they are very imaginative and highly addictive reading! roll on season 3 of true blood!!

Hey you guys are talking about different vampire series, You should check out Laurell K Hamilton. Amazing writer, she has two series out right now. One about a female vampire executioner, Anita Blake who also raises people from the dead for a living and in that series vampires are legal citizens as well. She also has a series about a Female detective of sorts who is a Faerie.
True Blood great show can’t wait for season three, even though season two is only just airing here now, but thanks to the wonder of the internet I’ve managed to watch the whole season two. this show just gets better.

I’m in Australia and have just seen the second series, totally loved it…… I wish I was only waiting till June to see the 3rd series, we are soooooo far behind. Though I know alot of viewers want Bill to be with Sookie, would really love to see Sookie end up with Eric after reading the books, Bill isn’t the nice guy and Eric is painted in a much more positive light with his feeling for Sookie. I am glad that the show kept Laffaette and didn’t kill him off like in the book. I love his character.

Part of the plan was for Preston to seduce Sookie and sleep with her so she’d be happy; Niall knew she hadn’t had sex in months as Quinn was missing. This happened in the short story “Gift Wrap”.

I have read all the books of the Sookie Stackhouse Series, and Preston, the character you describe can’t be counted because Charlaine Harris did not publish “Gift Wrap”, it can be easily confirm just by checking out her biography. I would like to make my own version of the story as well, where I wouldn’t kill Claudine, but if we must stick to a fiction world be must respect the author as the last word, after all the author’s right it’s law. We simply can’t count our own stories based over others, that’s plagiarism. Unless you buy the rights.

I’m currently reading Charlaine Harris’: Sookie Stackhouse Series, which infact does closely follow the series. Also! i’ve noticed on On-demand they’ve brought back some of season one of Trueblood! Thank God! I was starting to detox on it. But I truely recommend that everyone reads the book series, AFTER! they see the show, or else it’ll ruin the show. I like most the fact that the show has suck intricate spider web-like entanglements. I love this show, and the characters played. You know I just found out that Anna Paquin was bi-sexual. Is that new news to anyone else?

You mean True Blood closely follows the Sookie Stackhouse Series, right? Because the TV show was based off of those books, not the other way around.
Really, people should read the books first, they were first and ruining the ending of a book for yourself is way worse than ruining a show. Plus, the show has so many differences it won’t really be ruined.
