Sookie’s Compassion: True Blood Discussion Post
We’ll get to the Eric/Sookie stuff in “I Will Rise Up” shortly, but that ending has to be discussed. Godric went into the sun, by choice, as a way to make amends for his sins. In the end, it was a human – Sookie – who was with him, crying for his pain and reminding him that “God doesn’t punish, he forgives.” Godric, you left us too soon. Will his sacrifice be enough to gloss over the PR nightmare in the wake of the bombing?
Sookie’s compassion for Godric stood in stark contrast to Bill, who wanted to wash his hands of the whole situation. It seems that Bill’s moralistic, black and white view of the world is starting to get on Sookie’s nerves. Can Sookie stay with someone who doesn’t seem to care about another vampire’s very real pain? Will witnessing Eric’s grief soften Sookie’s heart toward him at last?
Eric is one complicated guy. On the one hand, we have the conniving weasel who tricked Sookie into drinking his blood. On the other, we have the man who adored his maker and pleaded with him not to martyr himself, or to let him go into the sun alongside him. And then there’s Dream!Eric. How much of that was Sookie’s subconscious trying to make him worthy of taking Bill’s place, and how much of it was Eric projecting an image of himself into her mind? Can he be the compassionate lover she dreamed about? And did they share that dream, or was it all in Sookie’s head?
Back in Bon Temps, Maryann’s hold over the townsfolk seems to have reached everyone except Sam, Andy, Hoyt, Lafeyette and Lettie Mae. Even Sheriff Bud and Maxine Fortenberry are now under her influence. Will Hoyt come home and notice the change in his mother’s behavior? Or will he stay away, with Jessica, like he threatened after that disastrous dinner? Will Sam and Andy figure out what’s going on and find a way to defeat Maryann? After all, Sam can be a fly on the wall, literally, and listen to what she’s up to. Now that Lafayette and Lettie Mae have snagged Tara, can they talk some sense into her? Also, did having Eric’s blood help Lafayette take down Eggs?
We had some much-needed bonding time with Jason and Sookie as well. The siblings aired some grievances, Jason apologized, Sookie tried a little tough love, and they watched Sarah Newlin freak out on Steve during a live news conference. It’s OK, Sarah – we hate his hair, too.
There’s more, much more, to discuss from this very emotional episode, so take it away! Just remember, no spoilers from upcoming episodes allowed.

I am soooo team Eric but i have to pick up for Bill. I don’t think that Bill tries to hold Sookie back on purpose. We have to keep in mind that Bill is from a different era than Sookie and Eric. Eric is a barbarian. Sookie is modern and Bill is old fashion. It seems to me that there personality reflects the time period they were born/raised in.
i agree w/ you Nickeola.
Wow!
where to begin, I think Alex did an amazing job (as i suppose almost everyone does) I was watching it Sunday night and i and my roomies all began to sob. You could just feel the pain that Eric was going through, He was losing his closest friend.. Alex your awesome!
as for Sookie and Eric..
I’m Team Bill. I have never read any of the books but i am so addicted at this point that i am ready to read them.
… I kinda love what i saw in Eric, He does seem to finally show the heart that is inside him (deep inside him)
I am finding myself hoping that the dream was shared between both Eric and Sookie.
I am dying I repeat DYING to see more Eric Sookie action and that dream had got my attention I hope we see some emotion from Eric that is more human twords Sookie please Alan make something happen
I understand Godric HAD to die. Since he turned good, and is the most powerful vamp, he would just make all his underlings not kill or hunt humans, thus no drama or tension.
But I dare say, and I hope that I am wrong, but that scene was SO good, so large, that AB and CH may never match that level again. Is this scene the moment where TB jumps the shark, goes downhill form here? How do you top that?
Look at everything else:
Eric and Sookie and Bill- just another love triangle, fun, but nothing GREAT
MaryAnn vs. Tara and Bon Temps- Maryann’s going to lose we all know it
Hoyt and Jess- is good, even though Jess is probably going to die
Werewolves in season 3
All the other action and drama, as much as it is to watch, seems almost small now.
Is it possible that the Godric storyline appeared too soon in the overall fabric of TB?
Still though, Godric….great character, great writing, great performance. Charlene Harris, Allan Ball, Allan Hyde, other writers and director….excellent job! You to Alexander. That was the BEST scene in the entire series thus far. One of the better fictional scenes in television’s recent history.
I just hope that TB continues to grow, develop and sustain itself.
Why do you think Jessica will die?
A 2nd prominent vamp is supposed to die this season. I SERIOUSLY doubt it’s Bill or Eric b/c they are in other books and too important. I can’t think of any other main character vamp that’s on the show.
Pam and Chow are not really that prominent in the show, they are secondary vamps. Isabella is a Dallas vamp and the main crew is going back to Bon Temps.
When I say prominent, I mean air time on TV, not in the ranks of the vamp culture.
I don’t want her to die. She is beautiful, and I like her a LOT more now than I did when she first got turned. She is REALLY cute.
But why else would AG get us to know her? Having her break up or marry Hoyt seems a little anti-dramatic.
Maybe the second one is Stan not Jessica…
I agree I think it was stan.
I think so, too–and it was a tricky spoiler, if you ask me–he wasn’t THAT prominent.
I loved the Godric/Sookie scene at the end. It has been awhile since a show actually made me sad while watching it.
Yeah this was an awesome ending to the episode…Sookie is just a truly compassionate person and cares about people, and she could see that Godric was truly good. Thats what I really like about her. I thought this scene was really touching.
GO TEAM BILL AND ERIC!
I was disappointed in the Eric/blood exchange scene. It was very cheesy and nothing like the book. Sookie running into Bill’s arms like a small child whining was very unlike her character.
I agree Gabby. I thought Sookie running to Bill was a tad over the top, AND in the book Bill wasn’t exactly a nice guy during that attack. He abandoned Sookie to chase down the FotS humans and slaughtered them. The show is really downplaying Bill’s less desirable characteristics and overemphasizing Eric’s. But overall the episode was fantastic. The godric story line was incredible.
That did irritate me that they made bill the saint in that scene. In the book he doesnt even check to make sure she is still alive first. Plus the acting in the scene except for eric was over acted. eric was supposed to be.
I think they’ve made Bill too much of a saint throughout the season. Nothing is ever his choice or his fault. Even murdering people in the past was because he was trying to prove he loved Lorena so somehow it’s her fault. Even when Bill chased the FotS kid at Godric’s, you knew the kid wasn’t going to be killed.
I agree with Jill’s assessment too. Book Bill made some choices like ordering “room service” when synthetic blood was available and not checking on Sookie after the FotS attack. But he also tried to find her at the church, and he bathed and cared for her after she was injured. He’s a mix of good and bad like Eric. Oh and foremost he’s a vampire – not a vampire wishing he were human again.
I LOVE true blood, and i agree with ya’ll about the eric/bill scene. I am soo starting to be team eric
and I cannot wait for the next season already even though we are not finished with season 2, but I loved!! book 3 ! so im excited to see how it is played out, and i so hope there is a lot more sookie/eric very soon.
oh and i really like the way they changed it alittle with the godric/stan story. very nice.
I thought the whole scene between Eric and Godric was very powerful stuff-It’s been a long time since I’ve been this drawn to a show and its characters.
Poor Bill–because he will always be the low man on the totem pole with others lording over him and no chance of promotion–hello! world of immortals!–no wonder he just wants to slink home and hide. (Yes, book fans, I know of other reasons, but I’m not getting into them).
And Eric & Sookie–WOW. Team Eric must’ve been wetting themselves. That was a CRAZY scene. I look forward to more, as much as I feel bad for Bill.
When this season’s over, it’s gonna kill me–even my husband said to me, “We’ve got to wait till JUNE for Season 3?”
Go TEAM ERIC!!!!!
I hope the writers will try and stick to the books for the rest of the seasons. Eric and Sookie are the main characters NOT Bill, and he’s definitely not as innocent as they make him look on the show. I hope they bring out that part too, let Sookie know the real reason Bill sought her out when he moved to Bon Temps.
