“The Vampire Diaries’” Ian Somerhalder Wanted True Blood Role

In a recent Q & A with Newsweek, Ian Somerhalder (The Vampire Diaries, Lost) revealed that he had auditioned for True Blood, and was upset when he didn’t get the part. “I am. I’m from New Orleans. There’s a lot of vampire mystique and mythology that resonates there, and I was fascinated by it. I always wanted to play one. I auditioned for True Blood. I just couldn’t convince Alan Ball that was my role. And then I didn’t get it, and I was very bummed. I couldn’t watch True Blood until now.” Oddly enough, given his current role on Diaries, he didn’t audition for a vampire role. It was Ryan Kwanten’s Jason Stackhouse that Somerhalder auditioned for.

While I don’t doubt that Ian could have pulled off a part in True Blood, I’m really liking him as the bad vampire, Damon, in Diaries. He’s pretty creepy, especially when he goes completely vampire. Maybe he can still wind up guest starring in the third season. Come on, Alan Ball, give a guy a break! He’s pretty enough.

I have to admit I can’t see him as Jason. But there are so many other potential roles for him still to come in the Sookieverse, though, if we go by just the books. I look forward in hope for him :)

I love Vampire diaries! I agree there are plenty of roles yet to come in True Blood. So give him a chance, Alan. But then again, with the shows popularity Ian may just stick with the Vamp Diaries, or maybe that’s just wishful thinking :)

So I gave “Vampire Diaries” a chance and really didn’t like it. I just don’t see it in the successful light like “TRUE BLOOD”. It was like a knockoff Twilight Meets Buffy Meets True Blood. Bad Actors and actresses and no one really stands out. I will remain loyal to “True Blood” & “Twilight”..

It is SO much better tahn Twilight (and this coming from a Twihard). As much as I LOVE the books and the movies, the acting in them is not good at all.

As for Vampire Diaries, the first two chappies aren’t as good, but then you just can’t stop. The first time I watched VD, I was like “good heavens, teenage drama, drama queen!”, but then my friends told me “stick with it a little longer” and now I’m addicted.

Give it a little more time.

I see him as Alex from book six, he would be perfect for that role!!

  5. Tiera says:

AHhh… i loved hima s Boone, and he’s the only reason i go out of my way to watch “The Vampire Dairies” and i’m considering reading the books because of his character. i think the guy who plays his brother, Stefan, would be Edward Cullen’s double if it were not for the slight facial difference and his hair’s shorter.

  6. Amalea says:

Wasn’t Vampire Diaries written way before Twilight?

The guy playing Stefan is pretty darn hot.

  7. Tiago says:

Ian Somerhalder as Jason? Give me a break.I mean I like the guy, but Ryan Kwanten = Jason Stackhouse. No escaping it.^^

I’m quite fond of Jason now, after season 2.I used to hate his guts.

  8. Pam's Girl says:

You know, I think he maybe could have pulled the role off, but it’s just that now (for me at least) nobody will ever be Jason Stackhouse but Ryan Kwanten. I’ll never be able to place anybody else in that role, lol. Besides, I’m enjoying Iam Somerhalder very much as Damon, even though Vampires Diaries is not near as good as True Blood and Damon, while wonderful, is certainly no Eric Northman. ;)

    • Isabelle says:

I disagree… personally Ian could pull off the character of Eric (even though he’d need waaay more presence and that underlying menacing/broody dominance Eric displays). But not Jason…no.
But agreed with all the rest.

I became obsessed with True Blood from the first episode, and season 2 really consolidated the fact that THIS is my fave series ever.
However, I must admit I wasn’t too thrilled about the first couple of Vampire Diaries episodes (and nearly dropped it alltogether)…it just lacked the mastery behind TB, but it has gotten a lot better :) and not only the actors are gorgeous but they play good roles -even if slightly predictable.

I want TB back!!!!Don’t want to wait for june…and agree with all the above about mr. Ian getting a role in future episodes ;) oooh, I think I might just die (very happily, admittedly) if there’s some sort of epic on-screen duel: Eric vs Damon thing going on…

      • Rosali says:

Exactly what I said: the first two chappies of VD aren’t very good. I nearly dropped it as well but fortunately my friends got me to give it a chance and now I love it.

Of course, not as much as TB, lol.

When I first found out Ian had auditioned for TB (didn’t know for which role), I immedately thought Eric. Not sure if he could’ve pulled it off… maybe he’s too young (or looks too young). But I would certainly love to see him as a guest in TB.

SO GLAD June is almost here!

  9. kaye says:

Yes, Vampire Diaries was written WAY before Twilight. And Ian seems to be doing a great job as a vampire in that show.

I think it would be hard to pass off Ian as Jason since he doesn’t look like Anna Paquin. Ryan and Anna really look like siblings.

  10. Kristen says:

I think Ian Sommerhalder would be great as Claude!

  11. Tiera says:

Kristen! i agree… he does look sorta… impish, don’t he? i just caught the latest Vampire Diaries (really daunting how he smiles all the time in the friggin’ show) and was thinking of what character he’d be good to play TB, Claude could be a possibility.

  12. lucaboden says:

I’ve been watching Vamp Diaries to get my weekly Vampire fix since True Blood season is over….in all honesty, I think the show is typical CW. Ian brings some edge to the show, but all the other characters are well just way too Vanilla CW style. They need some Tara and Lafayette characters to make it a bit more chocolat.

  13. Paige Kimbrell says:

He is pretty enough to play Claude, and I think he would do a fine job!

  14. EvilCookie says:

I can’t see him as Jason but I think he couldn pull of the role of Sam :)
