This week’s recommendation for True Blood fans waiting out the hiatus is another vampire series that Liz and I have fallen in love with: The Vampire Diaries. Not only is Ian Somerhalder’s villainous Damon smoking hot, we like watching Nina Dobrev’s Elena navigate her very complicated life as the supernatural competes with personal tragedy and just being a teenager. But enough about us, let’s hear from Vee and Red at fansite Vampire-Diaries.net why you should be watching:
The Vampire Diaries on the CW
A TV show based on a series of novels, featuring an ensemble cast dabbling in sex, blood and violence in a small Southern town. At its heart: a love story between a headstrong heroine and a vampire struggling to reconcile his thirst for blood with his humanity.
Sound familiar? Now throw in the vampire’s equally bloodthirsty-but-unrepetant brother and you have The Vampire Diaries, the CW Network’s newest supernatural drama, based on L.J. Smith’s beloved young adult series, and starring Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, and Ian Somerhalder. If you’re in need of a fix as you await True Blood’s third season (we’re fans too), might we recommend an hour of your Thursday night spent with vampires, fledgling witches, protective ex-boyfriends, a secret society of vampire-hunting town founders, missing campers, conniving cheerleaders, complicated siblings – with the promise of more to come?
And, hi, yes – our vampires are able to walk in the day. So what? It just means they can rip your throat out anywhere, any time, any place. And they do rip (and gnaw, and tear). They may be pretty, but the blood sucking is not. (But maybe it can be – if you know what we mean, and we’re sure you do.)
The Vampire Diaries staked the Twilight comparisons through the heart – quite literally – earlier this season, but it’s not “True Blood Lite” either. Sure, it’s a network show light on the graphic sex and gore, but it packs a mighty emotional punch, and there’s a lot more story to tell. This is just the beginning.
Vampire-Diaries.net has lots more information about the show, the cast, and the books. The Vampire Diaries airs Thursdays at 8/7c on the CW.

I have not watched the show yet, but it sounds great. Will check it out
Have been watching VD and so far enjoy it… want to read the books because books are always better, so if I like the show I will love the books! Love the casting for Damon and Sefen, not so sure about Elena yet. Can’t wait for the next season of true blood and book 10! Although Bill really made me angry, part of my heart still belongs to him and Eric…well how can you not love Eric! Screw teams…I want them both
Watching it and love it!
I have been watching! I needed something for the TB lull. I actually am into it. At first I was questioning it, but now I’m hooked!!
I have been watching from the beginning. I have also read the first 4 books. The first episode started out like the books and then it did a complete 180. I only watch now bc Damon is just so HAWT!
I’m not yet watching The Vampire Diaries but I have all episodes recorded on my DVR! I will get to them eventually. My mom watches and loves the series. These books would be awesome to win — you know they always say the books are better than the movie/show!
I think True Blood is better than the Vampire Diaries. For one, The Vampire Diaries is almost like a soap opera. One minute Vicki gets attacked by a vampire and survives(twice),then gets turned into a vampire, and finally, she’s killed by a stake. However, I still keep up with it. Soap opera or not, it’ll jsut have to do until seaosn three of True Blood returns
Always love trying something new!
I am watching the show but I have not read the books.
I have read the books and am currently watching the Vampire Diaries. I am enjoying the show, but it is definitly not my True Blood.
i read the books back in the 90s. like with true blood, it’s been interesting to see where the writers are going with the storyline apart from how the author’s vision took it.

I love the show. I read the books over ten years ago and got so psyched when they announced a show. Just wish it was on demand so I could mini-marathon it
I haven’t started to read the Vampire Diaries yet, but I have heard good things about the series and would love to start. I need something to keep me busy between now and when True Blood comes back on.
it sounds GREAT i love things like this !!!!!!!!!
Great show!!!–Have been watching since the beginning to get my good lookin’ vampire fix
My daughter and I are watching it together – and we have great discussions about the supernatural and cute boys – good bonding time!
I’ve been watching Vampire Diaries since it first aired! I haven’t read the books, but I heard the show doesn’t really follow the storyline. This doesn’t bother me one bit, I still think it’s a well pull-together show! Plus the vamps are hotties, just the way I like em! :]
I would like to read this novel because i enjoy reading interesting ideas such as this. I like watching the show “The Vamp. Diaries”, so i should like the book. I really miss “True Blood” i wish it wasn’t so long away. I feel like there is something missing.:(..and also a fan of ” Twilight” OF Course.:)
Vampire Diaries is awesome i’ve watched from the beginning because of my loss of True Blood. I would definitly recommend it i like that theres witches something different from True Blood. I must say i am in love with both male characters its kind of a bill eric senerio i guess thats what keeps me interested. They both keep that show hot hot hot!. It’s a definite to check out and i already hope for a season 2.

I have been watching the Vampire Diaries. I wasn’t sure if I would like it at first but it has been very entertaining. I can’t wait until the next episode tomorrow!
great show but not as good as TrueBlood
watching since it started
I have not watched it…yet! My cousin keeps telling me how good it is, and I want to watch it! Thanks for the contest!
I have been watching the Vampire Diaries, it is really well done, I am addicted to the show and I love all the characters!! Would love to read the books as they usually have a fuller story than a tv show. Can’t wait to see more episodes, hope the show runs for at least 4 seasons.
I have been watching the Vampire Diaries since they began, and I will admit to getting easily hooked. I love True Blood too, but the shows are too different to compare and I like them each in their own right. I would love to read the books and see how they compare to the show. I love the tortured soul type vampire, more Byron-like and recently tried my hand at writing my own!
Great Giveaway!

Now that I’ve read this, I’m curious about The Vampire Diaries. I can’t decide, however, whether I should read the book or watch an episode of the show first.
I’ve been enjoying The Vampire Diaries. Love me some Damon! Gotta get my vampire fix somewhere until True Blood’s back!
I’ve been watching The Vampire Diaries from the beginning. It’s a great show!!! Anyone who hasn’t tried it should. Of course, it’s not True Blood, but what is? I haven’t read the books yet but I’m looking forward to reading them soon.
