True Blood Season 3: Who Is Alcide Herveaux?
Welcome to the first in a series of features about the new characters coming to True Blood in season 3. We’ll be taking a look at these new characters using both information from casting calls and from the novels on which the show is based. Beware, spoilers ahead!
Who is Alcide Herveaux?

Joe Manganiello will play Alcide Herveaux on True Blood
Fans of the Southern Vampire Mysteries, the novels on which True Blood is based, have been hotly anticipating the appearance of Alcide Herveaux almost from the beginning. The emails began in earnest shortly after season 2′s finale: “Who will play Alcide?” We now know that Joe Manganiello landed the role, but what do we know about the character himself?
We first meet Alcide in Club Dead, the third novel in the Southern Vampire Mysteries. Eric sends him to help Sookie, who is searching for Bill after he’s been kidnapped. Described as tall with thick, curly, black hair and green eyes, Alcide catches Sookie’s attention immediately. He’s a sturdy man, big as a boulder with biceps Sookie reckons she could do pull-ups on. She also notices that his mind is buzzing and “red”, cluing her in that Alcide is a full-blooded werewolf. He’s a member of the Long Tooth pack in Shreveport, along with his father. His sister, Janice, is not a were in the books but her status on the show is as yet unknown. Alcide and his father, Jackson, own a surveying business in Shreveport called Herveaux and Son.
Although he and Sookie have instant chemistry, in the books, at least, the timing is never right for them to pursue a relationship. Sookie is searching for the kidnapped Bill, and Alcide has his own romantic troubles in the form of his on-again, off-again girlfriend, Debbie Pelt. (She’ll get her own post soon.) As Sookie is drawn further into the were world, Alcide serves as both a guide and a protector.

Boy, if I were a single gal, I’d be putting that “In Brief” description in my requirements on my eHarmony page. Wow!
I’m Team Northman all the way, but deep, deep down…okay not that deep…I hope that in the show, Sookie and Alcide hook up. There was just something about the two of them! I can’t wait to see if Anna and Joe have chemistry on screen like the chemistry Sookie and Alcide had in the books.
Alcide’s father was a werewolf and member of the Long Tooth pack, but his sister was not. Only one child of two full-blooded werewolves can be a werewolf. Alcide’s sister, a hairdresser, knows about the pack and that her parents and brother are weres, but she herself is not one. That’s according to the books. Alan Ball and his writers may have changed the nature of weres for the show.
I was gonna post this same thing! I was afraid I was being too technical-but i’m glad my fellow Trubies note the small things as well! Janice, while one of my favorite peripheral characters, is most definitely not a member of the long-tooth pack. However, this may have been changed for the show because, correct me if i’m wrong, but aren’t shapeshifters only born as the first child in any pure shifter pair? And as we’ve seen in the casting calls, Sam Merlotte’s brother Tommy is rumored to be a shapeshifter as well. Maybe he’s a half brother, but if not I would be sad with the show’s lack of continuity with the books.
I agree. I wish they were a little more on point with that. There have been a lot of small things that have been changed, that SHOULDN’T have.
But I guess it would be cool to have MORE “supernatural” characters. Well, now that I think about it…how are they going to do Debbie Pelt’s sister, since in the book that was one of those surprise that they give you. ‘Cause she ended being a shape shifter too or something. Ah, I dunno. Please don’t change to much!
You should note that in the books, Debbie pelt was adopted by the pelts because they couldn’t concieve at first, and wanted to have a “shifter” child even if she weren’t a were. Debbie is a lynx remember? SAMs bro though to stay true to the books would have to be a half brother.
That’s right! I totally forgot about that part. Man, I need to go re read all of them.
Debbie was actually not a Lynx, but a Fox.
You’re right, in the books Janice is not a were. We’re not sure yet if she’s a were on the show, but I will clarify that point above. Good catch!
This is definitely a better picture of this actor. I hope this is the look he’s sporting for Alicide ’cause he looks pretty darn hot.
Alicide is definitely not a clean-cut kinda character and this look is more how I imagine him!
true that! Hot vampire and were.. S3 is going to be great!
Lots of eye candy for the women, anyway. But what about the story? Or maybe we can’t have both.
No biggie for me as far as who is the werewolf other than Alcide..honestly, his sister in the book was kind of boring…a married hairdresser???….hated to see the show go that way, this sounds more interesting…can’t wait for the Club Dead scenes….and yes, he is HOT!!
Just read my post…..and I apologize to any married hairdressers out there, including my sister…I was speaking only in the context of the book and the series…my bad.
I so love Alcide in the books! I read all 9 hoping they get together but if Alcide and Sookie can’t be together than I want Bill and Sookie!
Nice choice! Drool. I’m into this. I can not wait for Season 3. The new cast looks amazing. Relatively close to my imaginary Alcide.
I cant wait for season 3, I know when youre a fan of the Sookie books you tend to notice little inconsistencies between the books and the show but I like being shocked, if it was all the same, well I wont go on! I think the guy whos playing Alcide looks just like I imagined and HOT!
I always liked the idea of Spookie and Alcide getting together but I think Im pro Team Northman too!
Hott Hott Hott!! I couldn’t wait to see who would be casted for Alcide! I’m a happy camper!
i liked alcide when i first met him the book but he never steped up and claimed sookie for his own.
Damn Alcide looks YUMMY!!!
Exactly how I imagined him in the books…lets just hope a little more goes on “ON SCREEN” than what went on “ON PAPER”!!! lol
NICE……..I wanted to start on his chest with my tongue and just lick down……..it should be a law that he can not wear a shirt EVER.
Where are guys like this…are they made in a lab somewhere…..can we clone him……
