True Blood Season 3: Who Is Holly Cleary?

Welcome to the tenth in a series of features about the new characters coming to True Blood in season 3. We’ll be taking a look at these new characters using both information from casting calls and from the novels on which the show is based. Beware, spoilers ahead!

Who Is Holly Cleary?

Here’s a twist: True Blood is introducing a character in season 3 who we should have met last season! Holly Cleary first appears in the second Southern Vampire Mysteries novel, Living Dead in Dallas, although her character gets more attention in book four, Dead to the World. She’s a minor but recurring character throughout the books, even dating Hoyt Fortenberry at one point. In the novels she’s in her mid-20s, divorced and the single mother of five-year-old Cody. She’s a waitress at Merlotte’s, and a Wiccan. Although she does practice some witchcraft, she’s mostly interested in living the Wiccan lifestyle.

The casting call for Holly on True Blood alters things a little bit. She’s now the thirtysomething “presumably single” mother of two children who applies for a job at Merlotte’s. The “presumably single” qualifier suggests that she might be hiding out from an estranged husband, thinking that Bon Temps is a sleepy rural town where she can live quietly. And really, considering this show, she must have a secret of some kind! The casting call also notes that Holly is “oddly prescient”, which disturbs the already high-strung Arlene, so we can assume she will have at least some sort of supernatural prowess. Holly Cleary will recur from mid-season 3 possibly into season 4, which has book fans pretty excited about a certain Eric storyline that we suspect will end season 3 and kickstart season 4.

Lauren Bowles will play Holly Cleary on True Blood.

I think that Alot of Book 4 will get started in Season 3… Like they said, Eric’s kidnapping will only take place over 6 episodes. That leaves 6 to spare, and with the Hot Shot people and Holly, and possibly Claudine I strongly suspect that A Good Chunk of Book 4 will occur in this season. They’ll have to really because I doubt True Blood will last more than 6 or 7 seasons. They have a long way to go in a short time, and there are definately books that can be condensed. I think Eric Running naked through the woods would be a great cliff-hanger… But I can’t see it being the first of book 4 being covered, if it’s the start of season 4.

I loved Holly in the books especially as she and Sookie became better friends. I think that she will make a great addition to the show and I am so pysched to hear that they are going to do book 4. I don’t care when they do it- this season or next, just please do it and stick to he good parts of the books:)

I think this season will have a lot already so they will probably leave it till next season. They already have the fairies, Debbie Pelt, Alcide and the weres, Bills kidnapping and all that fall out, Eric and Sookie’s dynamic growing, plus Jason, Hoyt, Jessica, Tara and Sam’s stories to tell. And now Holly! But who knows, I have been wrong before:)

hey remember (if you’ve read the books) that it was Holly who had an affair (relationship?) with Pam. THAT might be a tasty morsel to explore, since we’ve certainly had our share of same-sex relationships this season…

Wasn’t it Amelia that had an affair with Pam? Holly ends up with Hoyt in the books.
