**SPOILER ALERT**
As usual, True Blood season 4 will pick up immediately where season 3 left off, so at least some of our questions will be answered right away. Alan Ball has declared this the season of the witch in several interviews. The role of Hallow, a necromancer and an important part of the witch wars in the books, is being cast for season 4 and we know that Holly returns to play a role in the action.
Alan also stated in the little clip after the finale that we’ll meet other supernatural beings in season 4. Something besides vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters, fairies, and witches? We’ll also see a major upheaval in the world of vampire politics, what with Russell being MIA for the time being.
Already confirmed to return are: Sookie, Eric, Bill, Sam, Tara, Jason, Lafayette, Pam, Alcide, Terry, Arlene, Jessica, Jesus, Tommy, Holly, Crystal, Claudine, Hoyt, and Russell.
Updated 11.12.10: Hallow Stonebrook and Portia Bellefleur have been cast.
Updated 01.06.11: Spoilers for True Blood episodes 4.01, 4.02, and 4.03 are posted. We’ve also launched our “Who Is…” series to get to know the new characters for True Blood season 4.
Updated 01.13.11: Spoilers for True Blood episode 4.04 are posted and Antonia has been cast.

I was really surprised that they didn’t end on a cliffhanger like they had the previous seasons, meaning that the cliffhanger for season 1 was what happened at the beggining of book 2, and the same held true for season 2-cliffhanger/beginning of book 3. But I guess that would have been too predictable, eh? However, to continue in the SPOILER vein, Alan has dropped hints that Eric will have some of the same issues he has in book 4. Those of you who know the books know what I’m talking about!
So we’ll have that to chew on until season 4. Quite the gestation period, isn’t it? Our imaginations have been fertilized, but it will be 9 months before we see the reality of what we have only been able to make educated guesses about!
i hope season 4 would stay true to the books and still have eric losing his memory and be with sookie! it would be funny… AND HOT!
thanks for spoiling it
tell me more please
Didn’t you click on this page for the mere reason that it said ‘spoiler alert’?
Besides, the majority of True Blood fans are mostly people who have read the books.
Not according to an interview that Stephen did last year…something to the effect of it only being 5%. You would have to youtube it, I think it was Comic Con 2009. Alex is on the other end of the couch with a look on his face like, what the heck is he talking about. very funny interview.
That’s some old info, sue. More people have read the books by now as Harris’ sales have soared in drastically in the past year. Not to mention all the people who share the books. I own the entire set and 3 of my friends have finished them with in a year, too.
I hope that A.B. puts a twist to what happens with Eric in the show vs. what happens in the books. I’m also very interested to see how the Witch storyline plays out with Lala. I’m thinking the other creatures introduced will be Demons.
Almost forgot about the Demons! That addition would be fitting now that the witches are out! One character that would be fun to bring to the screen would be Bubba. They could do a thousand things with his character! There has always been a ‘what if’ with you know who!
To Summerfree,
When are you going to get it? There will be no Bubba. It has been discussed many times, and Alan Ball says he can’t do Bubba.
I forgot about the demons too! What popped into my head when AB said that was Quinn…can we hope? I don’t see him coming into the show in the same vein as he does in the books though…Sookie has enough suitors on her plate right now!
The demons come in the books around the same time Quinn’s big bad Were-Tiger butt comes in. So its a toss up, but I would be willing to bet its the demons as I dont see enough room in the 4th season for the Witch War AND the whole New Packmaster event where she first meets Quinn. I bet we meet Quinn in season 5.
I hope that A.B. puts a twist on these characters as well. I read in an interview that he feels the characters in the show have developed differently then they do in the book. I love the fact that he is willing to stray away from the books and give us all some surprises. Demons definitely will be introduced. I hope that it doesn’t turn out Sookie has to fight them with her, “light fairy” powers. I feel that is so cliche. As for Sookie and Bill I hope she gets it on with the werewolf. I think he is so attractive and needs to be in the show more.
They have definitely developed differently than in the books. They are all darker and more complex characters, with the exception of maybe Alcide, but we dont know much about him yet.
“They are all darker and more complex characters”
I disagree. Some are more complex, but Sookie certainly isn’t, Sophie-Anne certainly isn’t, Calvin Norris DEFINITELY isn’t, Pam arguably isn’t….and even Eric arguably isn’t. I’m not saying he is more complex in the books, either, but that he is pretty complex in both. Arlene, too, is about the same. A lot of peripheral characters from the books have been developed in much more depth on the show, and new ones added, but a handful of really strong characters were left out, like Sophie-Anne’s consort.
I get your point, that the show has intentionally changed story lines and emphasized different aspects of the characters, so the books don’t predict the direction of future episodes. But, while I agree that the show has a much broader cultural subtext than the books, I don’t think the show’s characters are really that much deeper or darker than the ones in the original books. Give Harris some credit, the woman has an incredible imagination.
WELP. It’s been a good (short seeming) season. I guess the dragging out of the Maryann plot in season 2 seemed to make it last longer but everything hurried by so quickly in my opinion, my Sunday nights will be empty for 9 months. *Sigh* However I AM thrilled about season 4 approaching and finding out the bits and pieces in between. I will begin reading the books over again and knowing that no matter what happens in the show with Bill and Sookie they will be together in REAL LIFE FOREVER! So *Na-Na-Na-Na-NA * to you Eric and Sookie fans!! MUah ahaha. Bill fans win.
Hhaaha I agree friend 100%
Since when does it matter who’s together in real life LOL. Nothing to do with the show.
It matters- Since I LOVE THOSE TWO :p
The reason AB cant do Bubba, is because in the books Bubba is a vampire who was originally Elvis the famous singer. I am assuming Alan Ball doesent have the Copyrights to be able to put an Elvis lookalike vamp on his show. That is why they tried to keep Bubba hidden from the world in the books because they were afraid someone would see him and notice Elvis isnt dead hes turned into a vamp. This is how they explain the real life “Elvis Sightings” that happen.
Somewhat disappointing finale. Didn’t have the same impact as previous ones. Should have been 2 hours for a start! Really hoped we would see Eric running down the road to Sookie’s like in book 4
Alan Ball has done some fantastic stuff with True Blood but I don’t like the TV versions of Claudine and the faeries and Hotshot & Calvin Norris. Would have been much better if he had kept these v.similar to the books. Really hope that season 4 doesn’t have so many stories going on and much more of the main characters. Also DON’T mess with the Eric storyline from book 4!
Viv, I couldn’t agree with you more about the Hotshot debacle. Why did Mr. Ball decide that they had to be so low-life??? Calvin Norris a meth dealer? WHY?? In fact, I was disappointed in all the two-natured. The original versions were much more compelling than the caricatures on the show.
Most of Mr. Ball’s changes to the books are interesting departures that give more visual spice, but I’d like to know why everyone who turns furry is made to look ignorant, low-lifed, stupid, mean, venal, etc. The only exception was Sam and he was turned scummy in the last two episodes. Is Mr. Ball a “fur-ist” or am I being over sensitive? LOL
I still love the show and I’m totally devoted to the books, but I want to see TB get back on track. Disappointing finale. Very.
I was also disappointed with the way AB made Calvin Norris. Normally I do like that the show is a little different then the books, but not with this it was just sad. I also don’t like how he has Sam portrayed as a murderer. All I can say is that I hope he does keep the Eric story the same. I absolutly love the books and it would have been good if he just followed them. I still love the show thouh, and will continue to watch anyway.
I think the main reason he made Calvin Norris that way is because they already have so many characters on the show they cant have any more new ones, so they had to kill some people off throughout the season that they just brought in, and he was one of them.
I couldn’t agree more. As the series moves on, I feel it is losing its strength. Complexity of the were-characters sacrificed for trite good-vs-evil stuff, Claudine–that’s really sucks–Sam–but then, they have to do something, as he doesn’t have this big a role in the books at all. The season finale was basically mostly puzzling. I was looking at the screen shaking my head and feeling it had completely and suddenly lost it’s way…
Normaly I’m all for a show or movie following the books to a T but in this instance I honestly hope that Sookie and Eric do end up together. It’d be so perfect. But hey that’s just my opinion to each their own.
I felt the finale was good, but didn’t really feel much like a finale to me. I guess I expected more out of it or maybe wished it would have been longer. That hour just goes by way too fast!
I also was surprised that Sookie dumped Talbot’s bloody guts down the garbage disposal. Then she had that sinister laugh to go with it? Is it possible that she was feeling Eric’s vibe on hating Russell and no forgiveness (since she drank some of his blood). I definitely wasn’t expecting that. It seemed so out of character for her. It just seemed too cruel even though Russell totally deserved it…(remember that “after we eat your children” comment….oh my!)
Anyway, I agree with the sad depiction of Hotshot. Calvin Norris and his inbreed minions dealing drugs…and what’s with all the dirty underwear shots this season?! I swear Sam’s dad was sporting dirty undies for half the season.
Overall, I love the show and the books. I’m totally siked for season 4 and curious how Alan Ball will lead with the witch plot line. If it’s anything like book 4…Eric’s scenes will be VERY interesting…
Andrea,
I have actually had discussions about Joe Lee’s drawers. How did the costume designers do it? Did they buy them off a person who’d fallen on hard times or did they have some kind of lengthy process to make them look sooooooooooooooo filthy?? My other TB obsessed friend and I now refer to something messy or unkempt as being akin to Joe Lee’s drawers. Like, dang, I need to clean out my car, it looks like Joe Lee’s drawers…only we pronounce it “draws” for true urban authenticity.
Seriously, though, the whole Hotshot thing was really disappointing to see. As well as the loutish weres. And the way Sook dumped poor ol’ Talbot down the drain was a really yucky and unexpected moment.
Well, Season 4 is coming and I’ve ordered a bunch of other Charlaine Harris books to keep me occupied. It’s only 9 months….
Definately the finale should have been 2 hours, to many loose ends to tie up. I wish I had the books to read, but what about Haleys son. Remember Sookie said he has her psyhic power I’ll bet he will come back either in Season 4 or 5. Hope Season 4 has a better finale.
LOL about Joe Lee’s drawers!
What about Debbie ?
Im sure she’ll be back, and back with Alcide too like they did in the books.
I may be in the minority, but a lot of you say you’re dissappointed with the show because it’s not like it is in the books, but in my opinion, if that’s all you wanted, then why don’t you just go read them again. AB has said that he uses the books as a starting point then plays with them to get a different take. I would rather have that because then each has it’s own merits and surprises for us to flip out over. I probably wouldn’t watch the show if it was exactly like the books.
I’d get bored because I knew what was going to happen. Plus I love some of the characters they have added. I.E.- Jessica
I LOVE the show and I love the books. I don’t expect TB to be an exact mirror of the books, that would be impossible and as you said, boring to an extent. I enjoy the twists and turns the show takes for the most part. I think that with books you get to tell what’s happening and with tv and movies, you have to show what’s happening. To make the show more visually exciting of course the written word has to be altered. And some of Mr. Ball’s additions have been amazing, like adding Jessica and keeping Lafayette. Yes, I was less than thrilled with the finale and with the two-natured depictions, but that doesn’t diminish my enjoyment of the TB world.
Next June I’ll be parked in front of my tv with a bottle of TruBlood, wearing my Merlotte’s T-shirt and a bowl of pistachios waiting to do bad things with everybody in Bon Temps, Shreveport, Hotshot and wherever the hell Sookie is. LOL
I prefer the show over the books, so not all book fans think this.
Please Alan Ball tweak this and make Hallow bring back Franklin.
Seems to me next year is all witches! Jesus being one is something, is it bad or good!
Cause I really like him Also, who will be cast as Hallow!
Can’t wait to see and Sam! Will he and Tara be together!
I loved the books and love the tv show. I see them as seperate. If AB had made calvin norris and all the other characters like in the books he would have to have this show2 on for 15 seasons to explain everything. Some he will leave out, some he will kill. The show can’t go on for more than 2 more seasons. Bill and Pam will age, and the others because they are getting older don’t look the same. Enjoy everything while you can. Can you imagine if Sophie Ann had been like in the books and we would have that hotel thing, and trials, and her losing her legs? And then we would have to explain packmasters. Too much. AB is doing great. As far as I am concerned they could dispose of tara and her mother. Ugh. They should have made her like in the books. Charlaine will still be writing books after this show ends.
I totally enjoy what Mr. Ball is doing with Tara. I don’t understand the aggravation and I think it is usually just spoiled fans who simply cannot empathize with her issues. As one of the few remaining humans on the show Tara has to deal with not only a supernatural presence overtaking Bon Temps, but her own history and baggage.
Of all the characters on the show she has slowly but surely been subjected to some of the worst situations over and over and is still fairly resilient and strong. I expect her to come back swinging next season and if Mr. Ball were to relegate her to mommy land and simply being Sookie’s go to for clothing I’d be upset and feel cheated. You should too. TV show Tara is miles beyond book Tara and even Mrs. Harris has said so.
Jay, I’m also a big fan of Tara. I think Rutina Wesley is an outstanding actress and I, too, am hoping for great things with her next season. She has dealt with a lot in the past three seasons and it’s time for her to get her mojo back.
Does anybody have a clue as to the significance of the doll that was on the floor of Hoyt and Jessica’s new place?
I’m concerned it may be connected to the previous owner of the house. Take into account the doll was old and unkempt.
Maybe hoyt and jessica have a vampire baby one day??? not likely – but it would be cool!
I think they are using the doll to foreshadow the coming conflict between Jessica and Hoyt’s mom. After all she does collect dolls. And we saw her buying a rifle.
I think the doll has something to do with Summer. Remember when Hoyt brought Summer into the bar after a day of antique shopping…she’s obsessed with dolls.
great thought!!! i forgot about that entirely!
I am really looking forward to the Hoyt and Jessica story next season. I am very much wanting to see them get married. True Blood needs atleast ONE happy couple…
Good luck with that! Happy couples equals boring TV…
Not necessarily, the next season’s storyline for Hoyt and Jessica could be about them fighting to stay together and get married. So instead of problems between them (like bill and sookie) it would be Hoyt and Jessica vs. everyone else.
Please God no Bill and Sookie…they’re not a real couple, they should be severed severely. Team Eric and Sookie for the win
I heard the doll in Jessica and Hoyt’s house is voodoo.. adding to the whole witch storyline this season?
The finale was not what I expected.. Interesting about Lafayette. Is Jesus going to be training Lafayette witchcraft?? Good or bad? Oh well, the folks in Bon Temps will always be doing bad things! LOL
I think the Sookie / Eric story-line is so expected, knowing AB the whole thing will go down totally differently.
Even though I think fans would go crazy because of that.
I am definitely team Eric
As for Hotshot, possibly their line of story is not that significant compared to the others.
As of Sam we didn’t see him kill his brother, maybe he just injured him.
The first season was brilliant, the second so-so, and this third season was a let down. It was too busy with too many silly characters and dumb crazy going on at once for it to be as enjoyable as it had been previously. I mean you need a directory to keep up with the characters now. The finale was a gimmicky, corny mess and surprisingly disjointed, so much so that even the actors’ acting seemed wooden and thoroughly unconvincing at times. How could the producers let such a great idea with such an instant following get so out of whack so quickly? Interestingly and ironically, the CW’s Vampire Diaries series started out bad, but has been steadily improving to the point where I’d say it’s now poised to take over as TV’s premier vampire show if True Blood continues to lose focus.
what i hated about season three number 1. was that they made the citizens of hotshot meth heads. calvin was an honorable man in the books, dependable he played a part a giant part in book four. i hope they atleast keep the debbie pelt storyline as close to the book. i love rutina i want her to hav a storyline badly.
number 2. i felt because of anna and stephen romance and later marriage the writers have made this romance between sokie and bill go on to long.
number 3.in the books the chemistry between sookie and eric is hot. i mean eric saves her from long shadow he gives her his blood to save bill and he helps her by savin her life in the gas station incident. all of the great scenes from the book that contain eric and sookie have been taken out.in my opinon sam is the only true sexy man on the show would like to see more of himand tara. jason as the savour of hot shot is like the stupid leading the blind. jason needs better material i like his character. lafayette is storyline is truely interesting because we have nothin to base it on he was killed in the books and i like the idea of him being a warlock/seer.
i can on and on about lots of other things but i wont. i do love wathcn true blood cuz i love seeing my favorite characters come to life but so sad to see it bring butchered.
I look foreward to seeing the vampire royalty and the power they unleash over their subjects just when you thought eric was boss
MAN….ALL I GOT TO SAY IS….TB IS WATS UP..AND I CANT WAIT FOR SEASON 4!!!!
First of all…I would like to say, ‘How can anybody like Bill?’ Sure he was lovely when he first came into the show, lovely in a very dark and mysterious way. But over the seasons he’s turned, evil, vindictive, secretive. He’s almost killed Sookie several times, and drained her dry. If I was Sookie I’d rescind his invitation into all places I would be staying and tell him to get f***ed. No disrespecting Stephen Moyer, he’s lovely, and I think it’s so cute that he and Anna Paquin are together <3
Moving on =]…I think AB should construct this season to be about Sookie and Eric as it is in the books, e.g. him loosing his mind and Sookie looking after him. Because people will want to see that and because, well, Alexander Skarsgård is so dishy we want to see a lot more of him, am I right?…Plus, him and Sookie being together is so adorable it would be lovely to see it screened on television.
I personally think, Sookie in the programme should be the same as in the books, e.g. she shouldn't get back together with Bill, nor Quinn, nor any other man, but still see Eric on daily basis, and have little nips together as she calls it in the books, because them too together is cuter than 'Bill and Sookie' and is based on pure love. Because Bill's used her from the start, and Eric only used her abilities. So…What do you guys think?
OH don’t worry that is exactly where AB is going…Bill’s time it’s over, he had his 3 season as 3 books of CH and now we’ll have an indipendent Sookie, not his puppy, a strong woman who will give hard time to the Sceriff as in the books, and they will have their great story, with changement but not totally of course…their time is coming and it won’t last 2 episodes but seasons of course with their troubles becouse they are S/E we’re talking about. i thought this season was clear about it.
Oh good! ’cause I really don’t want to have to see Sookie and Bill together again, they make me so angry. She’s a strong woman and being with Bill makes her so weak. I wouldn’t be bothered if Sookie didn’t get with any of the men, I just ‘hope’ that AB goes with the books and at least has Sookie and Eric together occasionally, and have the same passionate relationship as in the books.
I don’t know much about the new season coming up, I just hope it goes in the same direction as in the books! Keep me updated =]
First, I thought Calvin in the books was so boring…kind of a added character Charlaine really didn’t need..and it is really believable that Sam has a terrible past, a past that Charlaine didn’t do justice to..Alan Ball ended up making Bill’s behavior really worse than in the books…so not sure how he will be able to redeem himself…hopefully, Alcide will get a better storyline than in the books, and he and Sookie will get together. Eric and Sookie was only 2 weeks in the whole book 4, then takes till Book 9 before they are together again..so a whole lot of time for Sookie to be with someone else….maybe find her way back to Bill?…I noticed they did not mention Sophie Anne for Season 4…I thought I read where the actress playing Hadley said the Queen turns her into a vampire?…
