True Blood Fan Wins Art Contest With Godric Painting

When Da’Shawn Owens heard about the art contest sponsored by Sorenson VRS Young Artists for deaf children, he knew exactly what to submit: an oil portrait of True Blood‘s Godric. Just 17 at the time, Da’Shawn painted it after watching Godric’s final, redemptive days in season 2. As part of the entry, he sent in an essay which he shared with us:

Why Godric Inspires Me

Da Shawn Owens and his award-winning painting of Godric

A vampire, Godric, from HBO’s True Blood who inspired me very much.  He looked eternally sixteen. Unfortunately, he had been very evil for two thousand years. In Fellowship of Sun’s religious plot, Godric realized his sin was an aversion to God.  At the end, Godric repented as a good vampire, so he thought killing himself would make the big difference.

“I want to burn” came his reply to Sookie Stackhouse which Sookie was crying. But what inspires me most was his saying :”A human with me at the end and human tears. Two-thousand years… and I can still be surprised. In this I see God.”

I was crying so hard when Godric died incredibly in a glorified fire of a blue star.  He just smiled proudly at the sky while the sun appeared above the horizon, and he faded away without screaming or agony. Gone.  Honestly, in my opinion, I think Godric made a beautiful death than Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) tried make a suicide! Of course, he can’t die from the sun but Volturi could kill him anyway. Edward Cullen didn’t make me crying which Godric could.

What a great story! Congratulations to Da’Shawn on his beautiful painting and on winning the contest. A video of Da’Shawn talking about his painting and his dreams for the future is available on the Sorenson website.
