Sophie-Anne LeClerq

The “teenage” vampire Queen of Louisiana has a name so French, it almost seems fake, doesn’t it? And yet somehow I think that’s her real name. Sophie is the French form of Sophia, which means “wisdom” in Greek. It’s a popular name for female royalty in Europe and Britain, as is Anne. Another Franco-version, Anne comes from the Greek Channah, later Anna, meaning “favored grace”. Two names steeped in royal tradition, traced back to ancient Greek, lend an air of sophistication to the Queen.

Here’s where the twist comes in: although it sounds rather elegant, LeClerq appears to be a version of the Le Clerc, the French word for “clerk”. As in, a lowly office or shop worker. So we have two regal first names, followed by a surname that possibly denotes Sophie-Anne’s family origins. Many surnames derived from either professions or locations of families, usually the father, so it seems likely that centuries-old Sophie-Anne is descended from clerks. Perhaps her father or grandfather worked for the French royal family?

Next week: Reader’s choice. Whose name do you want examined next?

The book was Definately Dead, where Sookie, Sophie-Anne, Andre watch the reconstruction of Hadley, and to repay Sookie for that Sophie-Anne tells her WTMI about her life. In Sookie’s opinion anyway. Of course, the name on the show, like how the renamed Pam, could just be her given birth name. But I think old Vamps change some part of their names along the way just to add a little excitement. ha ha ha

I think the information provided shows why Sophie-Anne would have chosen the name. Judith is so dull in comparison.

You asked who we would like to see next. Have you done Jane Bodehouse? I know she doesn’t play very much into this season, but was pivotal in the first couple of seasons. I always found her name interesting. Also have you done Claudine/Claude/Claudette Crane? Or any of the Fae? In the books they explain that all of the Sky fae have sky names and the water fae have water names. For those who have not read the books, I think people would be interested in that part of the story. I have not seen it played out yet on the show that way.

Or you could do sort of a jumble one for the less pivotal characters. Like you already did Stackhouse for Sookie, but you could do Jason, and Adele, or Andy, Terry, Caroline, and Portia Bellflour? Like one last name, and then bits about each first name? Just an idea. I mean repeating the same last name seems silly over and over again.

Or maybe you could do a whole “Hot Shot” family tree just so we can see how the names cross over. LOL Just kidding there. Not the same sort of information I know.

Y’all really need to read the books. Sophie-Anne’s real name is Judith as has already been stated… and she did come from very “humble” beginnings, a small town in Northern France, but she was the daughter of the wealthiest man. So you are on point in saying her name is a bit of contradiction. I love the character of Sophie-Anne… and I’m pretty sure they are going to kill her off in that fight with Bill. Which makes no sense because Bill isn’t nearly as old or strong as her and the politics of it all would lead Bill to being killed too. If he kills Sophie I’m going to be highly disappointed.

As a matter of fact, we have read the books – all of them. Who’s to say that her father’s wealth didn’t come from his occupation?

I’ve read the books, but we’re focusing on the show here (thus why we looked at Pam’s name on TB, not in the books). Sophie-Anne’s “Judith” backstory hasn’t been even hinted at on the show.
