Alexander Skarsgard to Star In & Produce Viking Epic

Variety reports that True Blood star Alexander Skarsgard has chosen his next project: an epic feature film called The Vanguard. Right now just a pitch, the movie follows two Viking warrior brothers determined to return to Sweden after being banished to North America. Dark Ages road trip, anyone?

Warner Bros. bought the pitch, to be written by Chris Boal and produced by Skarsgard, who will also star. The studio is looking at it as a potential tentpole (read: blockbuster) with Oscar potential.

Why did he say “no” to Thor? He had something better up his sleeve. Clever man. “Thor” was PG-13, another in a long list of cheesy superhero epics, and Disney owned. I mean really, how brutal and raw can a Viking epic get with a PG-13 and made by Mickey Mouse? Slim & none were the chances of him getting any critical acclaim with “Thor”. It will be forgotten with “Green Lantern” this summer. With Skarsgard himself producing, “The Vanguard” is bound to be something authentically Norse, rich with details that Disney execs would gloss over, object to, or cut on the advice of bean counters. The combination of Skarsgard’s looks, talent and the right script could showcase him as a serious dramatic actor and get him an Oscar nod. It’s his time to climb to the next level. “Bravo” Alex for taking the less obvious path becoming a legend in film history.

Skarsgard doesn’t really have the build to be Thor anyway which actually was an enjoyable film with some fine actors in it if one can step down the soapbox of pretension for even a nanosecond. This sounds interesting, will be keeping an eye out for it.

Straw Dogs doesn’t look like my kind of film, but I will probably watch it when it hits cable anyway. I just might go to the theater to see Vangard. It sounds good, and I do agree that AS is a decerning businessman when it comes to his career choices. And if it is true to history, maybe we will get to see a more true to form Eric style viking this time. Men were not so prone to cutting their hair back in the day, from what I have ever heard/seen/studied. Sounds like a very good possible storyline too. The funny thing is I think AS I think TB, which makes me think Viking anyway. But this movie will probably establish him completely apart from his TB roll, and hopefully the rest of the world will catch on, and then come watch TB so the show can go on and on for years to come. What can I say, I try to look at the bigger picture. LOL
