Friday Five: Villains of True Blood

In the world of True Blood the villains are sometimes difficult to define. Some villains may just be people who were victims in a series of unfortunate events. They could be out to right the wrongs done to them. Some are just downright evil. Here is my list of villains that have appeared in all four seasons thus far.

  1. René Lenier – René was Arlene’s psycho ex. He was one of those twisted villains made that way when he murders his sister after finding out she was in love with a vampire. René had issues with vampires mainstreaming and living among humans as though they had a right to. His prejudice became an obsession, and throw in the guilt over murdering his own sister, you’ve got a class-A psycho, mass murdering, villain.
  2. Maryann Forrester – Was she really an evil villain or was she just being a maenad? This was is a little blurred. One could say that she was a maenad who went a little loopy. However, I believe she just was who she was, and maenads aren’t nice creatures.
  3. Russell Edgington – Russell was just plain evil. I believe he was born bad and over the centuries that he existed, he just grew more power hungry and rotten to the core.
  4. The Magister – Here was a vampire who may have started out just doing his job by the book, but over the years the power went to his head. He became more ruthless and evil in his punishments, and he was taking far too much delight in the pain he inflicted on others. He was definitely a villain to be feared.
  5. Antonia – You could think of Antonia as a villain, the “big bad” for season 4, but was she really? I believe that she is one of those unfortunates I mentioned above, who was a victim of horrible events and is now out to destroy those responsible for her murder. The fact that innocent vampires would be destroyed means little to her. Antonia’s last and only memory of vampires is of rape, torture and feeding off of her and her friends. I’m not 100% sure I’d be any different, especially if I knew I had the power to destroy them, slowly and painfully, like they destroyed me.
There are more, of course, but I could only choose five. Lorena was on my list too. Who would you add to the list?

Over-night fan (almost literally) of the Sookie Stackhouse series since early 2008. Co-owner of True-Blood.net. Anxiously anticipating season 6.
