I too have also experienced some backlash in the past over my character preferences. I have learned a long time ago to never express my love for Bill in the comments ;) I love all of the characters on this show, even the ones that we are supposed to hate. And I am sooo happy that you guys feel the same way and brought it up in this podcast. Thank you gals for your neutral and “equal opportunity” fansite ;)

    Liz and Mel,

First, I would like to say that I love you and your website, and I apologize for acting like an obnoxious bitch about the survey results. Some of the things I said were definitely uncalled for.

Second, please understand that Eric fans are frequently accused of only liking Eric because he’s hot, so any notion of voting for him because of a knee-jerk reaction, or any suggestion that Eric fans vote for Eric only for supeficial reasons is bound to be received badly.

Third, please recognize that you asked the fans what story arc they liked the most in S5. You didn’t ask which arc was the most focal, most dramatic, most compelling, had the most action, or had the most changed character. When asked such a simple question, is it really surprising that 60% of the fans liked the arc that took a character in a positive direction more than the arc that took a character in a negative direction? And is it really so surprising that the actor performing the positive story arc was liked more?

Fourth, please understand that unless there’s something you haven’t been telling us, and you are actually the writers of TB, anything you see on the show is not a fact but your personal opinion. You should not assume that all the fans feel the same way, or see the show design or character development the same way, even if the opinions of some of the commenters support your views.

Fifth, I don’t enjoy getting bashed by other fans, but I don’t expect Bill vs. Eric war to stop…ever. Buffy the Vampire Slayer had been off the air for more than 10 years, yet Angel vs. Spike war is still going on. The fact is as site administrators, you are held to a higher standard in terms of sensitivity and diplomacy towards the visitors to your website. And when you administer an impartial survey and then dismiss certain results as invalid or unreliable because they are incongruent with your personal expectations, it hurts our feelings and takes away from the safe, neutral environment you are so valiantly trying to create.

Sixth, I agree that the votes for shifters and weres may have been different if they were separate categories. I really enjoyed Sam and Luna’s storyline this year. I know TB is trying to do interesting things with the werewolves, but honestly Alcide is such a limited character in the books that it’s hard to imagine what the writers can do to make him more compelling on the show. Maybe as we see him struggle with getting his pack off V, his story will be more interesting in S6. We know the writers can certainly turn a character around.

Seventh, I am interested in finding out what happens to Luna, and if Tara and Pam will actually go on a real date, and how Andy and Holly will take care of 4 baby fairies. I am looking forward to S6, and in the meantime, I will enjoy your posts and your podcasts. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication.

Rina, thanks for your feedback and your apology. I would like to address this statement, “And when you administer an impartial survey and then dismiss certain results as invalid or unreliable because they are incongruent with your personal expectations…”

We did not dismiss the results as invalid or unreliable. We asked WHY those were the results, because we wanted to know what those who voted that way were seeing that we did not. As we said in the podcast, I think asking if it’s a “knee-jerk reaction” is valid for many reasons, and we’ve had people tell us straight up that they voted that way since posting the results. We asked why the Weres and Shifters scored so low and why Jason & Jessica fell out of favor, too. No one has gotten all het up about those questions.

        September 20, 2012 at 9:47 pm

That may not have been what you intended, Mel, but that’s how it came across. I know that you didn’t intend to offend anyone, and your questions and concerns were coming from a positive place, but I can’t help how I feel. The only thing that I can say is that I appreciate you accepting my apology for being rude, and we will have to disagree on some things.

        • Mel

          September 20, 2012 at 10:26 pm

I’m sorry that’s how it came across to you, Rina. All the best.

    • Liz

      September 20, 2012 at 9:25 pm

On your first point, apology accepted.

On your second, we hear the same thing from others that are not necessarily Eric fans only.

On your third point, you still missed the point of our surprise. I still don’t get it but thanks to explanations from fans who took the time lay it out the way they see it without punching us in the gut, I can at least see why they voted as they did. And that’s all we were asking for – clarity.

On your fourth point, we have never assumed what you are claiming. You entirely missed the mark with that one.

On your fifth point, this is not our first time around the block. Mel and I have been at this kind of thing for more than ten years. We know how fandom works. We have seen the good, the bad and the very very bad. Our policies on this site are put in place because of what we have learned throughout the years. We are well aware of the passion that drives the fans, and that it will never go away. Your claim that we “dismiss certain results as invalid or unreliable”, etc., is so far wrong and it negates your apology! You’re just rehashing what you’ve already stated over and over and over again. It also shows me that though you claim to have listened to our podcasts, you have not listened to us. Too bad, really. And by the way, we aren’t ‘trying’ to create a site where all can feel welcome to gush about their favorite characters. We already have created it. Occasionally a few like to wander in and try to tear it all down, but we are still here and still strong, regardless.

I’m so sorry you still don’t really understand, but we welcome your thoughts on the show in general.

I think season 6 is going to be mostly about fairies. I was wondering if True Blood is going to take a page from the books like good vs bad fairies “sky fairies vs water fairies”. Maybe Warlow is like Brendon?

    • Liz

      September 20, 2012 at 8:39 pm

That’s what I’m thinking too, Wendy. It certainly seemed as though they were setting up next season to be about Warlow and how our friends in Bon Temps deal with Billith. Those two stories may be what S6 centers around.

I have a theory that maybe with Hoyt being gone it has soured some to Jason and Jessica cause of the damage it did to character that most actually really liked. Another reason could be it lacked believably. I mean how they went from Jason fawning over Jessica then to Jessica fawning over Jason totally disregarding the fact he shot her in the head a few days earlier and the fact Jason just lost his life long friend.

This just popped in head. What if we get a season full of crazy vamp hating Jason and its the return of Hoyt that snaps him out of it

    • Mel

      September 21, 2012 at 10:00 am

The situation with Hoyt definitely put a damper on my enthusiasm for Jason/Jessica. He was hurt so badly, how could they proceed? I think both of them are filled with guilt and grief and anger right now. Not a good time to be in a relationship.

I think that shifters would’ve been more popular than weres if you have separated them.

Luna trying to act as Sam was amazingly funny and really one of my favourite scenes this season. Last year I thought that Luna is a really boring character, with all the drama about her ex.

Emmas’ turning into a wolf was strange since this is supposed to happen when she becomes a teen, and also keeping the wolf form is supposed to be pretty tough while there isn’t a full moon. So pretty much the whole Emma is constantly a wolf and she got kidnapped to be a pet story made me think WTF.

My favorite scene with Sam was when he shifted in Rosalynes’ head, but the scene in the store when Kenya is searching and Sam is on the ground – it seamed like cat on catnip. The scene in the farm though was awesome Sam moment.

To me Alcide didn’t get much love because the packmaster fight was lame – running after a scared boy takes neither strenght nor courage. I expected something more like the last one standing wins, instead we got whom ever got more V wins. Nice example.
It would’ve been so much better if Alcide went to his father and his father said that the only way to be a true packmaster is to fight fair and square, and “You should learn from my mistakes son.” or something like that. And of course Alcide goes back, fights fair and wins, because the good always wins – the second time.
But no, the message that I got was: Only a drugabuser can fight a drugabuser.

    That is my personal oppinion.

      September 21, 2012 at 7:24 am

I think Emma always being in pup form had more to do with child labor laws than anything else so i gave them a pass on that.

I also would have preferred that Alcide became packmaster without using V but it was clearly stated that it gave too much of an advantage so i guess its more plausible this way. I hope that they bring Jackson back i would like to see how he influences Alcide

    • Mel

      September 21, 2012 at 9:58 am

I agree about Alcide and the packmaster fight, Elisha, and was very disappointed that they had Alcide take the V. I know it was part of the books, but I didn’t like it in the books either. They’ve done such a good job of showing Alcide to be a man of integrity over the last 3 seasons, then blew it in 30 seconds.

The Luna and Sam stuff was crazy good! When they work together as a team, and break out the shifting abilities in a meaningful way, their storyline is outstanding. I was impressed with how the writers brought them into the Authority storyline; can’t wait to see how the aftermath plays out next season.

      • Helen

        September 22, 2012 at 2:45 am

Alcide didn’t take V in the books, Mel. :) Alcide ascends to packmaster after he and Patrick Furnan team up to fight the half sister of Cal Myers. Once all the fighting dies down, Furnan has been killed so Alcide declares himself packmaster.

        • Elisha_Q

          September 22, 2012 at 5:02 am

I think she didn’t mean taking the V, but the part about the last one standing wins.

          • Mel

            September 22, 2012 at 12:13 pm

Yeah, I was meaning more crossing the line of integrity in order to become Packmaster. It always felt like Alcide had to play dirty in the books, too.

          • Elisha_Q

            September 22, 2012 at 2:43 pm

O, I’ve never felt that. Using Sookie – yes, but not playing dirty.

  6. Sookieeleana

    September 22, 2012 at 10:55 am

I want to agree with those above with regard to shifters and weres. I thought Sam and Luna had a good season (and I’m a little concerned Luna won’t make it home as her skin-walking is slowly killing her perhaps every time she does it?). Also though I think Sam is a more likable character than Alcide. I have never found the weres interesting, and I don’t just mean in TB, but in all the forms of supernatural shows I’ve watched or books I’ve read. I hope Alcide doesn’t try to get Sookie involved in the pack stuff next season, she is going to have enough to contend with!

One thing that no one seems to be mentioning much is Luna shifting on live TV – surely now the shifters are “out” and there will be fallout from that next season?

    • Mel

      September 22, 2012 at 12:13 pm

We talked about that in our finale podcast, Sookieeleana. Unless they explain it away as CGI, the shifters are definitely “out”.

One thing I am interested in finding how it all plays out is what or who will be the Authority now that most of the council are dead….Billith, Eric and Nora are all that’s left and we know Eric doesn’t want anything to to with the Authority…I believe that Billith loves power so I figure he will still want to be part of the Authority or be the Authority all by himself but Nora might want to challenge him for power and also maybe they need new council members to replace the dead ones?

I hope Luna survives but I also think she is dying everytime she shifts into a person, so I would be sad if she dies because I like her with Sam. Alcide needs to stay away from V and sees what kind of relationship he can have with his father and with Rikki, who I like him with.

  8. Mary Ann

    September 23, 2012 at 9:54 pm

I’m late to the discussion. I am one who liked Eric’s character arc. Why? Because I *liked* it — he went from a place of “F Sookie” to a place of “She’s mine.” It was a positive progression. Bill’s was a negative arc. He went to a dark and dangerous place, and I’m afraid he might be evil in his incarnation as “Billith.” We’ll see. (Notice I didn’t gloat about his arc — I said I was *afraid* it might get worse.)

I am saddened that people in this — as in other fandoms — become so hateful. I have seen it before. It’s a shame.

About Alcide: His story in the books wasn’t satisfying to me, and I didn’t think he played fair (in his fights or in his efforts to win Sookie). I think maybe that’s colouring my reaction to his storyline in the show.

I called Pam and Tara last season when Pam confronted Tara and her girlfriend (whose name I can’t recall at the moment) when Pam’s face had begun to rot. There was so much heat there I knew they were foreshadowing some kind of relationship. I told everyone I knew and got laughed at. *smile*

    And now I’ll shut up.

    • Mel

      September 23, 2012 at 11:40 pm

Good call on Pam/Tara! It crossed my mind that they could hook up in season 4, but there was still so much animosity toward vampires on Tara’s part that I dismissed it.

    • Kris

      September 24, 2012 at 11:06 am

I enjoyed Eric’s arc as well. I’m a little sad about Bill, but he always did seem a trite self loathing. So, maybe it makes some sense? Still stinks though. Good call on Pam and Tara . I never saw it coming, but I love it.

    • Liz

      September 24, 2012 at 12:55 pm

No need to “shut up”, Mary Ann! You answer was thoughtful and honest and I enjoyed it. It is true that Eric and Bill moved in entirely different directions under the situations they found themselves in.

Why do some of you care about Alcide’s storyline? In most episodes, he just appears for 2 or 3 minutes than he disappears. Most of his limit screen time consists of him being half naked and whining. Whats worst is his character underdeveloped; one minute he hates himself for being a Were and, all of a sudden in season 5, he wants to be a packmaster so he can protect Weres. Where is the transition? Also, Alcide doesn’t like being a Were because his father stole money from the pack? What kind of bull-crap reason is that? A better reason would be because killed other wolf/ves or, maybe, he killed human beings; not because his father is a thief.

    • Mel

      September 24, 2012 at 10:29 am

Did you listen to the podcast? We don’t care about his storyline, that’s why we’re asking what the problem is with Alcide. He’s supposed to be one of the main characters, we’re supposed to care about his storyline (according to the show). But we don’t, and you enumerated several reasons why.

    • Liz

      September 24, 2012 at 1:05 pm

Fsanchez, you’ve been a hater since you first started posting you comments, which have all been filled with your hate. You do realize that this is a fan site for fans of True Blood. Do you also realize that there are other characters on the show other than weres and Alcide? You never comment on any of them. The only thing you have done is come in here and spew venom on one character. You look like a troll to me.

1st off let me say that I totally appreciate you guys keeping on with the ‘Casts while the show is off air for almost a year. (WHICH SUCKS) :) But you guys do alleviate some of the ‘withdrawl’ from having no new True Blood. SO THANKS !!
I loved looking at all your survey info, it was very informative and interesting. I think that a few of the questions, like the ‘character arch’ question, people just didn’t understand. I believe thats why the results came out as they did. It’s so hard to always try and make everything so neutral and just simple enough for the most people to understand. I know you guys are doing your best though and you do a great job of catching most of that. You can’tcatch everything though….. Just the way it works but Congrats on the attempt.
One more thing…. I’m hav ing soem problem getting my picture on here, The site won’t let me use one of the pictures that I have had no trouble using on other sites. Am I doing something wrong? Some trick I need to know? Thanks for the regular updates.

I agree, you all are doing an incredible job with this site. LOVE IT!!! :)
Re: Alcide, even in the books outside of S3, he hasn’t been a main character or story line. Yes, there seems to be an attraction between Sookie and Alcide, but timing is usually off. Do you think the relationship he is having now would be equivalent to the Maria Star relationship?
I am curious as to what is happening with Jason, ever since he started seeing his parents…. I wonder if Sookie could “hear” them as she heard Gran when she was getting the reading from Marnie.
Question, do we think Bilith will return to BonTemps? or hang around the Authority building?
In the HBO extras or somewhere, I recall an interview with Stephen and he said somewhere around his changing he was trying to portray a Holy S#*t moment when it finally hit him as to what he had done.
Do you think in his current condition he would be able to ask for help? And if so, how? Just wondering.
Also, since there is no clear Authority now, who will rule? Just wondering. Will another Regent appear from another area/state/ kingdom?
We know we have Pam and Tara, but what about Lala? What do we think his story line might be?

    • Liz

      September 26, 2012 at 12:18 pm

Whew, that’s a lot of questions! Let’s see if I can give you my speculations.

      * Lafayette: I have no idea what they’re going to do with him and his special abilities, but they can’t just leave him hanging around as filler. He’s too much of a beloved character and the actor has too much talent for that.

      * I’m thinking that Billith will replace the Authority all on his own. He’s much too powerful to need anyone else. However, he may need vampires to do his bidding, so I don’t know. As far as Billith’s story, I can’t venture a single guess or idea. I’m completely stumped.

      * I think that Rikki is totally taking the place of Maria Star from the books.

      * It didn’t look like Sookie could hear her “parents” when they were all sitting on the couch talking with Jason. For the record, I still don’t think they are really her parents. ;-)

Next season is just so difficult to pin down. Maybe we’ll be able to piece things together more after they begin filming and more spoilers start to surface.
