Sookie’s Compassion: True Blood Discussion Post

We’ll get to the Eric/Sookie stuff in “I Will Rise Up” shortly, but that ending has to be discussed. Godric went into the sun, by choice, as a way to make amends for his sins. In the end, it was a human – Sookie – who was with him, crying for his pain and reminding him that “God doesn’t punish, he forgives.” Godric, you left us too soon. Will his sacrifice be enough to gloss over the PR nightmare in the wake of the bombing?

Sookie’s compassion for Godric stood in stark contrast to Bill, who wanted to wash his hands of the whole situation. It seems that Bill’s moralistic, black and white view of the world is starting to get on Sookie’s nerves. Can Sookie stay with someone who doesn’t seem to care about another vampire’s very real pain? Will witnessing Eric’s grief soften Sookie’s heart toward him at last?

Eric is one complicated guy. On the one hand, we have the conniving weasel who tricked Sookie into drinking his blood. On the other, we have the man who adored his maker and pleaded with him not to martyr himself, or to let him go into the sun alongside him. And then there’s Dream!Eric. How much of that was Sookie’s subconscious trying to make him worthy of taking Bill’s place, and how much of it was Eric projecting an image of himself  into her mind? Can he be the compassionate lover she dreamed about? And did they share that dream, or was it all in Sookie’s head?

Back in Bon Temps, Maryann’s hold over the townsfolk seems to have reached everyone except Sam, Andy, Hoyt, Lafeyette and Lettie Mae. Even Sheriff Bud and Maxine Fortenberry are now under her influence. Will Hoyt come home and notice the change in his mother’s behavior? Or will he stay away, with Jessica, like he threatened after that disastrous dinner? Will Sam and Andy figure out what’s going on and find a way to defeat Maryann? After all, Sam can be a fly on the wall, literally, and listen to what she’s up to. Now that Lafayette and Lettie Mae have snagged Tara, can they talk some sense into her? Also, did having Eric’s blood help Lafayette take down Eggs?

We had some much-needed bonding time with Jason and Sookie as well. The siblings aired some grievances, Jason apologized, Sookie tried a little tough love, and they watched Sarah Newlin freak out on Steve during a live news conference. It’s OK, Sarah – we hate his hair, too.

There’s more, much more, to discuss from this very emotional episode, so take it away! Just remember, no spoilers from upcoming episodes allowed.
