True Blood Fashion: The Martyr
He only graced our screens for a short time, but Godric’s impact on the viewers and the characters of True Blood was immediate and profound. With such limited exposure, Godric’s wardrobe had to provide us with clues to his character efficiently, charting a startlingly vast journey from savage to saint.
The Savage
We first meet Godric 1,000 years ago on a battlefield. Eric is mortally wounded, preparing for death, when Godric whirls in to make him an offer of immortality. To get to Eric, Godric dispatches his compatriots in short order, deeming them unworthy of eternal life. Blood dripping down his chin, hair matted, and bold tattoos on display, Godric’s only clothing are his buckskin pants and shoes. It’s a primal, savage look, reflecting both the Dark Ages of civilization and the darkness of Godric himself. (Get the look: pants, boots)
The Saint
Centuries later, we encounter Godric again when he saves Sookie from a would-be rapist. Godric gives himself to the Fellowship of the Sun in hopes of atoning for his sins and bringing peace between humans and vampires. However, this is not to be, and in the end Godric martyrs himself, walking into the sun after delivering a message of tolerance to his fellow vampires. Attired in linen trousers and tunic, the simple, rustic garb underscores Godric’s Messiah-like teachings. The purity of the garments – unbleached and unstructured – are a visual reminder that Godric has thrown off the trappings of this world in preparation for the next. (Get the look: trousers, tunic)
Godric’s wardrobe had to show a lot about his character in a short amount of time, but it perfectly reflected the journey of the 2,000-year-old vampire, from bloodthirsty to pacifistic.
