Time to take a look at where we can find our lovely True Blood cast on stage and screen this year! We’ve arranged this update in alphabetical order to make it easier to scroll down to your fave and get the scoop. Enjoy!
Note: The True Blood cast is legion and new projects are announced almost daily, so we most certainly missed something. Apologies in advance.
Chris Bauer
You can catch Chris in A Dog’s Way Home, the story of Bella (played by a rescue dog named Shelby) who is separated from her humans and must travel 400 miles to get back to them, in theaters now.
Next Chris co-stars with Sam Trammell in Life Support, a family dramedy about a manic Roman Catholic family who is preparing for the death of their dying father. Starring Brian Dennehy, J.K. Simmons, and Lesley Ann Warren. Life Support is due in theaters February 6, 2019.
Anna Camp
Anna’s latest movie, The Wedding Year, co-stars Sarah Hyland, Tyler James Williams, and Jenna Dewan. Hyland plays an LA-based photographer who doesn’t want to get married with a boyfriend who’s ready to settle down and invitations to 15 weddings in one year. The movie is set for release in 2019 but no specific date has been announced.
At the beginning of the year, Anna reunited with her True Blood ex, Michael McMillian, as a guest on his paranormal podcast, Bigfoot Collectors Club! (Anna appears in episode 52.)
Janina Gavankar
Staying true to her nerd roots, Janina launched her Twitch channel in January where fans can watch as she plays some of her favorite video games. She also recently filmed Torrance, a drama about a former basketball star who has lost his wife and family foundation because of an addiction. He attempts to regain his soul by becoming the coach of a high school basketball team at his alma mater. Janina co-stars opposite Ben Affleck and Al Madrigal.
Ryan Kwanten
Ryan has a few projects in the works. He’s filming 2067, a climate change disaster thriller, in his native Australia opposite Kodi Smit-McPhee. That project started right after Ryan finished filming Kill Chain opposite Nicolas Cage and Anabelle Acosta in Colombia. Kill Chain follows two assassins through a long, bloody night of crooked cops, gangsters, hitmen, a femme fatale and an ex-mercenary. The movie is set for release in 2019 although an exact date has not yet been announced.
We do know when Ryan returns to the small screen, though. The Oath season 2 premieres Thursday, February 21 on Sony Crackle. From producer 50 Cent, The Oath‘s second season finds the Ravens attempting to free themselves from their debt to the cartel. Themes including redemption and the meaning of family are examined in season two pushing the characters to find a new path, conquer their inner demons and giving them one last chance to reclaim their lives as their own – all while trying to protect the ones they love in the process.
Joe Manganiello
Joe tried something new with the fictional true crime podcast (yes, that’s a thing) The Angel of Vine. This 10-part scripted podcast follows a modern-day journalist who uncovers the audio tapes of a 1950’s private eye, who cracked the greatest unsolved murder mystery Hollywood has ever known. Mike Colter and Constance Zimmer also star.
You can also see Joe in commercials for Hulu, co-starring wife Sofia Vergara. His love of Dungeons & Dragons continues to lead to new opportunities. Joe recently revealed that his recently retired character Arkhan the Cruel will become an official D&D character through a story he will help write.
Michael McMillian
As mentioned above in Anna Camp’s update, Michael is the co-host of a paranormal podcast called Bigfoot Collectors Club. Tune in for stories of the creepy and unexplained.
This month also saw the completion of the first story arc of Michael’s comic book series Adventure Van, available at your local comics shop.
Stephen Moyer
Steve has been spending more time behind the camera as a director and executive producer, but you can also see him in the second season of The Gifted on FOX.
Denis O’Hare
As usual, Denis has several projects in various phases of completion. A movie he filmed in 2017, The Day Shall Come, is rumored to be arriving in theaters this year after undergoing reshoots. Set in Miami, this comedy/satire follows an impoverished preacher named Moses who is offered cash to save his family from eviction. He has no idea that his sponsor works for the FBI, who plan to turn him into a criminal by fuelling his madcap revolutionary dreams. The movie co-stars Marchant Davis, Anna Kendrick, and Rupert Friend.
The Late Show, written by Mindy Kaling who also stars with Emma Thompson, John Lithgown, Ike Barinholtz, and Denis, debuted at Sundance with solid reviews. Amazon bought the U.S. rights for a record $13 million, so watch for a release date to be announced soon.
The Goldfinch, based on the acclaimed novel by Donna Tartt, is set to premiere October 11, 2019, getting a head start on awards season. Nicole Kidman, Sarah Paulson, Luke Wilson, and Ansel Elgort also star.
And if you happen to be in London this spring, you can catch Denis live on stage in Tartuffe at the National Theater beginning February 9.
Anna Paquin
Anna has two television projects on the go right now. She joined the cast of The Affair for the series fifth and final season, playing the adult daughter of leads Joshua Jackson and Ruth Wilson a flash-forward storyline. The season will air on Showtime in 2019.
More immediately, we’ll see Anna in her new series Flack, premiering February 21 on Pop TV (the same network that airs Schitt’s Creek). Anna stars as s Robyn, an American publicist living in London who is an expert in her craft but a complete self-saboteur when it comes to her personal life. Robyn’s work as a crisis PR strategist is fast-paced and unpredictable as she counsels ill-behaved high-profile clients in a world where problems can go viral in an instant. Anna also serves as executive producer of the six-episode first season, along with Stephen Moyer.
Carrie Preston
Carrie just wrapped filming Avalanche, which she talked about in our interview last autumn. The movie is set in a small town in Texas, although it was filmed in Louisiana, and follows an annual endurance contest (Hands On) to win a pickup truck. Although the event promises thrilling entertainment to spectators and the chance of a lifetime to participants, it ends in real tragedy.
Carrie’s latest project, horror film 30 Miles from Nowhere, arrives on DVD/Digital on March 5. The creepy story follows a group of ex-college buddies travel to rural Wisconsin to attend their scientist friend’s funeral, only to find themselves subjects in his latest deadly experiment.
Alexander Skarsgard
Alex has a full slate for 2019! He reprises his Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning role as Perry White in the second season of HBO’s Big Little Lies, although how exactly he appears is still questionable since – SPOILER ALERT! – Perry was killed at the end of season 1. Will he appear in flashbacks? Will he haunt Nicole Kidman’s Celeste and/or Zoe Kravitz’s Bonnie? We’ll have to wait until the new season premieres later this year to find out.
June brings us Flarsky, a comedy starring Seth Rogan and Charlize Theron with Alex as a supporting character. Rogan plays a down on his luck journalist who seeks out his childhood crush (Theron) – who just happens to be running for U.S. President. Alex’s role is not confirmed, but he likely plays one of Theron’s campaign staff. Originally scheduled for release in February, test screenings were so positive, the release was moved to June 7, 2019, to take advantage of summer movie audiences.
Also premiering this year is The Aftermath, a romantic drama in which Alex stars opposite Keira Knightley. Set in in postwar Germany in 1946, The Aftermath follows Rachael Morgan (Knightley) as she arrives in the ruins of Hamburg to be reunited with her husband Lewis (Jason Clarke), a British colonel charged with rebuilding the shattered city. But as they set off for their new home, Rachael is stunned to discover that Lewis has made an unexpected decision: They will be sharing the grand house with its previous owners, a German widower (Alexander Skarsgård) and his troubled daughter. In this charged atmosphere, enmity and grief give way to passion and betrayal.
So far the movie’s release is just billed “2019”, but this has “Oscar nominee” written all over it, so expect it to premiere at the Toronto or Venice film festivals in Autumn 2019 followed by a theatrical release and awards season run in November or December.
Also coming in 2019 is The Kill Team, a military drama in which Alex co-stars with Nat Wolff and Rob Morrow. According to Variety, the movie “follows a young soldier in the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan who witnesses other recruits killing innocent civilians and considers reporting them to higher-ups as the heavily-armed, increasingly violent platoon becomes suspicious that someone in their ranks has turned on them.”
While all of these projects are unspooling on the big and small screens, Alex will spend part of this year filming Godzilla vs. Kong, with Millie Bobby Brown and Brian Tyree Henry. His role in the monster match-up is not confirmed, but Variety speculates he will play the leader of a military unit. Godzilla vs. Kong is due May 22, 2020.
Sam Trammell
Get ready to see a LOT of Sam this year! First we have The Order, a 10-episode horror series coming to Netflix sometime this year. The show follows Jack Morton, a college freshman who discovers “The Order”, an intriguing secret society filled with sorcery and monsters and in the middle of an underground battle between the magical dark arts and werewolves.
Sam also wrapped filming on Pursued, a movie we don’t know much about yet, and It’s Time, the story of Ole Miss Rebel defensive back Chucky Mullins, who in 1989 became paralyzed after making a tackle against Vanderbilt player Brad Gaines. Neither film has a release date yet.
He just finished filming Reckoning, a 10-episode psychological thriller that explores the darkest corners of the human psyche through the eyes of two fathers, one of whom is a serial killer. The series will air on AXN outside the U.S.; no release date or U.S. network has been announced yet.
Sam reteams with his True Blood co-star Chris Bauer for Life Support, a family dramedy about a manic Roman Catholic family who is preparing for the death of their dying father. Starring Brian Dennehy, J.K. Simmons, and Lesley Ann Warren. Life Support is due in theaters February 6, 2019.
On March 15, Sam plays a very different kind of father in Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase. He plays Carson Drew opposite Sophia Lillis as Nancy.
And on April 17, he co-stars with Chrissy Metz in Breakthrough. Based on a true story, the movie is about a boy who drowned in a lake and was pronounced dead for nearly an hour. When his mother entered the room praying, suddenly he had a pulse. Sam plays the doctor who tries to save the boy.
Deborah Ann Woll
This is a “one door closes, five windows open” kind of year for Deborah. Netflix canceled Daredevil after three seasons, although Deb’s character, Karen Page, continues her story in Marvel’s other Netflix series, The Punisher.
She’s starring in the first real hit of 2019, Escape Room, currently in theaters. Adam Robitel directed this PG-13 take on the “Saw” series in which a group of strangers in a survival competition discover that the traps in the immersive game they’re playing turn out to actually be deadly. Deb co-stars with Taylor Russell and Tyler Labine.
Like her former co-star Joe Manganiello, Deborah is a Dungeons & Dragons fan. Next month she launches Relics and Rarities, a weekly RPG series on Alpha where she will guide the story and “take a crew of bold players on a quest to stop an unholy prophecy from coming to fruition,” according to Nerdist. Relics and Rarities premieres February 4.
