Darren Darnborough: “I know I’m the envy of a lot of women.”
In this week’s episode of True Blood, “You Smell Like Dinner”, we flash back to London, 1982, and a punked out Bill trolling for dinner. He hits it off with the bartender, Callum, and ends up snacking on him. Bill’s restraint in feeding on, but not killing, Callum confirms to a watching Nan that he’s the vampire she wants to help bring vampires out of the coffin. True-Blood.net had the opportunity to chat with Darren Darnborough, the British actor who played Callum in that pivotal scene.
A London native, Darren grew up near where the punk rock movement took off in England, so he felt right at home in that scene. Filming the scene was a departure from what he’s used to back home, where he worked on several TV series.
“Everything is shot like a film, so that one little scene [between me and Bill] took 17 or 18 hours. The attention to detail is ridiculous. They dressed up the bar we were in to be like one in London, down to every poster on the wall and every bottle top.”
Darren hit it off with Stephen Moyer right away. They grew up in the same area and realized that they have some mutual friends, so they had a fair amount in common. Darren recalls talking with Stephen about moving to Los Angeles to work on True Blood, not sure if it would catch on, and what a great attitude Stephen still has about the industry.
“He’s a lovely guy, he’s not bitter about the business at all. He’s really enjoying every day, and obviously he met his girl on the show, so he has a lot to be thankful for,” Darren chuckles.
As for the scene he got to play out with Stephen, Darren counts himself blessed: “I had a great, fun time working with him. He’s an awesome actor. Whenever you have a smaller role on a show like this, to have your scenes with one of the stars is amazing,” Darren enthuses. “Besides, how many girls would love to have Stephen’s mouth around their necks? I know I’m the envy of them!”
When he’s not being bitten and glamored, Darren is promoting the web series Andy and Chaz Bugger Off to America, a hilarious story of crooks trying to go straight that he produced and co-stars in with Craig Robert Young (NCIS). It’s like what would happen if you put The Hangover and Pulp Fiction in a blender.
