True Blood Fashion: The Preacher’s Wife

Last week we took a look at Maryann’s wardrobe and speculated about what it revealed about her. This week we’re taking a look at the opposite end of the spectrum, preacher’s wife Sarah Newlin. What do her clothes reveal about her?

Bringing the “Sun” to Fellowship of the Sun
While collecting the images for this profile, I was struck by how often Sarah wears yellow. We’ve only had a handful of scenes with the young preacher’s wife, yet for half of that she’s been wearing yellow. Happenstance? I think not. What better way for the Fellowship of the Sun to visually distance themselves from vampires than to have the lovely wife of their leader dressed like a beam of sunshine? She also matches the LODI t-shirts without actually  having to wear one. Clever.

Lest we think too much about possible color manipulation, the cut and style of these outfits is very conservative, as befits the wife of a man leading the anti-vampire revolution. The necklines are modest, although that keyhole neckline is just a teensy bit flirty. Capris, khakis, discreet jewelry and tasteful shoes complete her ensembles. All perfectly respectable and befitting a preacher’s wife. (Get the look: yellow cardigan and shell; yellow tee; white capris; khakis; white wedges)

Off-Duty Casual
When Sarah isn’t facing the congregation, her personal style kicks up a notch and becomes more colorful and flirty. She’s still the quintessential girl-next-door, but with some sex appeal. Her necklines get lower and the cut of her clothing gets a little tighter. Although she seems oblivious, Jason Stackhouse certainly notices. Is Sarah highlighting her assets to insure that Jason sticks with the Fellowship of the Sun?  (Get the look: floral top; red gingham shirt)

The Preacher’s Wife Has Two Faces
The first time we see Sarah Newlin, she’s wearing a tailored sheath and jacket, watching her husband spar with American Vampire League spokeswoman Nan Flanigan. Sophisticated yet soft thanks to the pastel lavender of the jacket, she’s the perfectly polished companion for Pastor Steve Newlin. After dark, however, she’s not afraid to to bring out the lingerie. While Sarah’s satin nightgown and robe certainly aren’t the most risque garments we’ve seen on this show, on her the effect is almost as startling as the frequent nudity. The fact that she felt comfortable wearing it in for a chat with Jason, in his bedroom, is either another sign of her naivete or her manipulation. (Get the look: sheath & jacket; negligee & robe)

The jury’s still out on Mrs. Newlin. Her wardrobe is a curious mix of wholesome and sexy. Do you think she’s playing Jason or is it all in his head? Or is she simply a beautiful woman unaware of her impact on men?
