Product Description
True Blood is the sexy, scary, wildly entertaining drama series from Oscar®- and Emmy®-winning Alan Ball (HBO’s Six Feet Under), and based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris. Mixing romance, suspense, mystery and humor, True Blood tells the continuing tale of Sookie (Anna Paquin, Golden Globe-winner for this role), a human waitress with telepathic gifts – and a so-far irresistible attraction to 174-year-old vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer). Surrounded by familiar faces – including her brother Jason (Ryan Kwanten), shape-shifting boss Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell), soul-searching pal Tara Thornton (Rutina Wesley), Tara’s cousin Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis); police chief Andy Bellefleur (Chris Bauer), vampire suitor Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgård) and teen vamp Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) – Sookie faces some new otherworldly threats in this season – as if vampires, werewolves, werepanthers and shapeshifters weren’t enough!
Amazon.com
Alan Ball's pop supernatural series True Blood expands its scope to an epic scale with its fourth season, which spreads its vast network of characters, human and otherwise, across the map while bringing aboard a host of new personalities, including a magic store owner-cum-white witch (Fiona Shaw) with a dangerous secret. Shaw's transformation from a mousy magic practitioner to vessel for the soul of a long-dead Spanish sorceress is the most intriguing storyline in the fourth season, which also concerns the return of Sookie (Anna Paquin) from the Faerie Kingdom and her subsequent romantic yearnings for Eric (Alexander Skarsgård), which naturally upset her beau and newly minted vampire king of Louisiana, Bill (Stephen Moyer). Though these two arcs alone would be sufficient for most series, season four also manages to fit in a fairly ridiculous bit of business involving Sookie's brother, Jason (Ryan Kwanten), who becomes a sort of stud for a commune of were-panther women seeking offspring, as well as the fate of Arlene's (Carrie Preston) baby, which begins to share some personality traits with its father, deceased serial killer Rene. It's a lot to pack into just 12 episodes, and as a result, some storylines that deserve to be fleshed out, like the relationship between fledgling vampire Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) and human Hoyt (Jim Parrack), are left on the back burner while less effective but flashier ones, like Jason's bout with the were-panthers, are granted a larger spotlight. The result is an uneven season in comparison to its predecessors, but that shouldn't bother die-hard True Blood fans, as the show's steady diet of sex, death, and morbid humor is still operating on full blast.
The five-disc Blu-ray edition of True Blood: The Complete Fourth Season is fleshed out by a wealth of informative and entertainment extras that provide a detailed look at the series' execution from the perspective of creator-executive producer Alan Ball, as well as key members of the cast and crew. Ball is front and center on the majority of the supplemental features, from commentary with Anna Paquin on "If You Love Me, Why Am I Dyin'?" to the 28-minute Final Touches, a postproduction documentary roundtable that explores the central themes and creative requirements of the season. Moyer, Skarsgård, Woll, Shaw, and Sam Trammell, who plays shapeshifter Sam, also contribute to five additional commentary tracks, and a vast number of the show's supporting cast reprise their characters in the Enhanced Viewing mode, which offers both video and text commentary on individual episodes. Much of this is quite amusing and well crafted, though they can only be accessed through the Enhanced Viewing option and not separate from their respective episodes. The little details are also key to the True Blood Lines, a thumbnail encyclopedia of the show's immense cast of characters, organized by their particular species (human, vampire, etc.), that traces how each are connected to the rest of the Bon Temps population. Each episode also gets a brief summation from the show's writers and producers in the Inside the Episode featurettes. A pair of double-sided DVD copies and digital copies rounds out this impressive set. --Paul Gaita

- Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2015True Blood is an excellently written series. I have watched it since it began, and recently bought this dvd set for my nephew. It is nothing like the Twilight series, and in my experience, people who really love Twilight usually do not care for this series - again, simply because the two are nothing alike. Some of the main characters here (as well as supporting roles) are vampires, but that's not to say this is a show "about vampires." This series is really best described as being about the people and goings-on of a small, backwoods Louisiana town where some of the people just happen to be vampires.
As mentioned above, the writing is excellent. One of the best aspects about this series is that it is definitely NOT predictable! Not in the least. You never know where the writers are going to take you...from one episode to the next, or from one season to the next. The character development, story lines, acting, directing, casting and effects are all first rate. Considering that the series has its fair share of killing (although not overly so, and it's certainly not the focus of the show), the series couldn't be called "dark" or gory by any means. I also would not call this show necessarily "violent" either. (Personally, I don't care for violent shows or movies, and I find this series to be tolerable on the violence scale. It does have killing and blood and bodies and body parts, after all there are vampires in it, but even so, it's done in a way that is not offensive or vulgar.)
There is comedy, drama, action and suspense...and very well choreographed cliff-hangers to end each episode. Despite the blood, death and suspense, the series as a whole is well balanced with comedy and other character's story lines which help keep it from being overly dark. There is a quite a bit of nudity - not raunchy, but tasteful and almost artful. So if you're sensitive to nudity, just be forewarned...or simply cover your eyes during those parts, because the story lines and acting make this series well worth watching. I easily give 5-stars to every season.
Another refreshing bonus is that the episode commentary for every season is also worth watching. The actors, directors and writers actually contribute thoughtful and interesting tidbits that add to the episodes and the series. It's best to watch the commentary after you've completed the season because sometimes they accidentally reveal things that happen later in that season.
This series is well worth purchasing.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2013I love this TV series. I have not read the books so I cannot compare the two. I am fascinated by this show: it's plots, the characters, and the premise. I believe the actors chosen for the roles have really shaped this show into what it is. This show isn't for children in my opinion. It is not a "Supernatural" level supernatural show. There is cursing, killing, nudity, sex, and a lot of violence. I won't let my 15 year old son watch it but that is MY choice as a parent. As for me, I love most things vampire so this show is right up my alley.
Of the 5 seasons, I think Season 4 was my least favorite (too much going on) although I still love it. I feel Season 5 brought it all back around again and Season 4 makes a lot more sense to me after seeing Season 5. I've had friends inquire if they could start with current season and I haven't recommended it to them. I own all the seasons on DVD so I can start them with Season 1 and go from there. Is this a show you could start mid season? Probably not. Is it a show you could begin at the beginning of any season and follow it? Most likely, but if you start at the first season you the viewer will understand all of the who's who, who's related, the character and relationship development which I think is important to this shows success. All of this is IMO of course.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2016Aside from the were-panther story line involving Jason and a few superfluous scenes involving addiction and impregnation by otherworldly creatures I really enjoyed this season. The main antagonist Marnie Stonebrook (and arguably Antonia Gavilán de Logroño though she is ultimately secondary and at resolution is not so easy to peg with a simple victim or villain label) is a fascinating and very deep exploration of themes of powerlessness suddenly coming into tremendous levels of power and the ravages such occurrences tend to have on perceptions of appropriateness and compassion for fellow human creatures. There is also a very interesting dynamic that develops as one of the series most powerful characters finds himself stripped and reduced to near helplessness for a large part of the season that really pays off when he is eventually restored to full strength with full memory of his time powerless and of the character who literally saved his life. Though season five's writing does much to make his character forget this ever happened (in some ways not all) it is very interesting and well written in season four. Storylines involving Sam's horrifically abused and tragic younger brother were also very interesting to me. There is a bit of mess too, stories that get started only to be dropped and ignored, but overall I really enjoyed this season as much as I enjoyed the mad originality of season two and it's hopelessly mad but fatally powerful and charming

5.0 out of 5 stars L'aventure continue avec les sorcières !

4.0 out of 5 stars

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent
