Alan Ball: “I love having a lot of characters.”

In a brief interview with Crave Online, True Blood executive producer Alan Ball commented on something fans have been discussing for a while now: the abundance of storylines and characters on the show.

Crave Online: Some fans think there are too many storylines on the show. What is your take on that?
Alan Ball: Well, just pay attention to the ones you like. To me, that’s part of what the show is. It’s this big, sprawling cast of characters and I love that about the show. We have a tremendous amount of really talented actors so just pay attention. Watch it more than once. Watch it three or four times so that way any questions will get answered.

Crave Online: Is it a dramatic struggle for you?
Alan Ball: No, I love it. I love having a lot of characters.

In other words, it’s supposed to be a show we watch several times in order to catch everything. We’ve been doing it right all along, Truebies!

Yeah exactly. This IS what drags the show down unfortunately. And it’s not just ‘some’ fans who think this, it’s what is talked about in most reviews too.

Yet, I read a lot of reviews where the variety is what keeps viewers coming back for more. It’s part of the popularity of the show. I also don’t think that 7 million viewers per week is any sign of a show being ‘dragged down’. Especially when those numbers remain steady, week to week.

I get in a real tangle about the many plots going on. In season 3 there were some awful ones and I just wanted to see the vampire stuff but in season 4 I am actually enjoying all the stories at the moment. (I love Tommy boy and so glad they are doing something decent with Laffy finally). Still I would always give more screen time to the big 4 for me – Eric / Sookie / Bill / Jason – they are the big stars of the show for me – so if losing some of the other stories gives us more of them then I’d be up for that – what I really want is MORE EPISODES

I love all of the characters. I know everyone loves to focus just on Eric and Sookie, but that’s ridiculous! The others are just as great!

I agree. I’m fine with all the great actors. I want more episodes as well. I like that I almost need to watch each one atleast twice, so as not to miss anything.
