Allan Hyde Bursts Onto the Scene

The debut of Godric in “Never Let Me Go”, True Blood’s fifth episode, immediately sparked a flurry of curiosity about Allan Hyde, the young man who portrays him. Exclamations of “Wow, he’s beautiful!” and “Wow, he’s good!” and “Who is this guy?” have spread quickly across the nearly infinite reaches of the Internet. For someone who has been on screen for barely more than two minutes so far, Allan has certainly made quite an impact.

As far as the question “Who is this guy?” goes…well, information on Allan is, as of yet, relatively scarce. An up-and-comer in his native Denmark, this 20-year-old has been busy for the last few years. Since 2002, he’s been involved in nearly a dozen voiceover projects, mainly dubbing imported TV cartoons and movies. If you watch any of the Harry Potter films in Denmark, you’ll be treated to Allan’s voice as Ron Weasley. Cool! Allan also boasts a beautiful tenor singing voice, which he’s put to good use in several Danish musical theater productions, most notably as leads in The Sound of Music (Friedrich) and as Gavroche in the Scandinavian Les Miserables Tour of 2002. Allan also contributed to the international Camp Rock soundtrack.

He began to catch the public eye with his 2008 film Implosion and stints on the Danish National TV shows “Album” and “2900 Happiness”. He furthered his reputation by foraying into writing and directing with the short film Cyketaxa (“Rickshaw”). Allan’s celluloid brainchild won Best Film and Audience Choice at Denmark’s 2008 Oregon Film Festival, which features movies “made by youngsters for youngsters”. High praise for a flick that was written in 5 hours, shot in 16 hours and edited in 3 days! [Google Allan Hyde + dvoted for an article on why and how Allan created this project.]

The international audience, though, probably best knows Allan for his lead role in the 2008 short film Awakening. This film, which was on the short list of potential Oscar nominees, received the 2008 Robert Award (the Danish version of the Oscars) for Best Short. It didn’t make it as far as the Oscars, but it likely helped capture the attention of studios in the US.

When the casting call for Godric was published, it called for an actor who could credibly pull off speaking Swedish. Since the Danish, Swedish and Norwegian languages are all very similar, this was a great opportunity for someone of Allan’s background to slip into this role. In actuality, he’s done more than slip into it – he has, from that first dark and inquisitive look into Eric’s eyes, totally owned it. Bravo, Allan!

We will all be looking forward to seeing how Allan continues to develop the character of Godric in the remaining episodes of season 2. If recent activity is any indication, this talented fellow is on the cusp of breaking through to the big time. In the meantime, if you simply have to know more, I recommend visiting his management company’s web page. Here you can find a show reel, curriculum vitae, a photo gallery, additional skills – and, of all things, his measurements. If you are just dying to know his inseam or ring finger size, this is the place to get it! In addition, there are several articles – presumably in Danish – which compels me to say Hey! If there’s anyone out there who can do some translating for us, we would be eternally grateful!

I have to admit to being pretty amused to see that, in the ‘additional skills’ category, it lists that Allan has his driver’s license. Since, in North America anyway, getting your license is practically a given, this one of those little points that reminds us that he hails from a different country and culture. However, it seems fairly safe to say that we are ready, willing, and able to embrace one Mr. Allan Hyde on this side of the pond, too.
