Godric’s Humanity: True Blood Discussion Post

This week’s episode of True Blood, “Timebomb”, revolved around the idea of “humanity”. Ironically it was a 2,000 year old vampire who showed the most humanity. Starting from the time he was captured by the Fellowship of the Sun through his welcome home party, Godric proved himself the most willing to show mercy. He allowed Steve Newlin to live, and Hugo, and stopped the massacre at the Fellowship of the Sun. He even let Lorena go after she attacked Sookie. However, there are several vampires who are unhappy with his show of compassion. Will a mutiny begin to take shape? It sure looks like Stan would love to take over as Sheriff of Area 9.

Meanwhile, the Bill-Sookie-Eric triangle is starting to take shape. Eric attemped to rescue Sookie, albeit at Godric’s request, leading to a discussion of semantics. “Maker”, “love” – complicated concepts indeed, but somehow that exchange gives Sookie what she needs to trust Eric when he asks. Then we got that hilarious scene where Eric pretends to be a Southern hick member of the FOTS. Too bad he didn’t have his stake on him to prove his membership into the vampire killing club. Giving himself up for Godric, and Sookie, Eric ends up chained to an altar at FOTS before Bill…and Jason…and the Dallas vampires arrive to save the night.

At Godric’s welcome home party, Sookie confronts  Bill about why he didn’t come save her and Eric is happy to (almost) reveal Bill’s whereabouts. Until Lorena does it for him. The ensuing catfight over Bill seems to prove that Sookie will not give him up, but she has questions. Will he be able to explain himself satisfactorily? Or does she have enough doubts now for Eric to find a foothold?

Humanity seems to have flown out the window in the case of Tara and Eggs. From Maryann’s Hunter’s Souffle – featuring Daphne’s heart – to the bizarre violence- infused lust fest on the dining room table, it’s starting to look like Tara and Eggs have lost who they are. Is it too late for them? Have they reached the point of no return, completely devoted to Maryann like Daphne was?

In spite of Andy’s attempts to explain Daphne’s death, and Sam’s innocence, Sam is in jail with several other townspeople who can’t remember what they did to deserve incarceration. As crazy as Andy’s story sounds, he holds the keys to solve the mystery of Maryann.

And in a hilarious and poignant storyline, Jessica’s reminders of her new status as a vampire continue. As if having Bill walk in on her and Hoyt weren’t bad enough, she will be a virgin “forever”, thanks to her new  healing properties. Hoyt’s bemused expression perfectly captured the moment.

Jason showed more progress this week, stepping up to his sister’s defense and even going to Bill to apologize for his previous behavior. It looks like Jason has had an epiphany about making generalizations about both humans and vampires. Way to man up.

Of course, this wouldn’t be True Blood if we didn’t end on a cliffhanger: Luke crashes Godric’s party with a bomb strapped to his torso.  Judging by next week’s preview, he ignites it and the aftermath is catastrophic. Try not to wish your week away counting down to episode 209, Truebies!
