We Taste Test the Tru Blood Beverage

One of the biggest buzzworthy moments coming out of Comic Con last month was Alan Ball’s announcement that Tru Blood would soon be available in the real world. OK, not the Tru Blood the vampires drink on the show, but a blood orange soda in a replica bottle. We got to try it with vodka at the True Blood party, but when HBO sent us bottles to try at home, we were pretty excited. Below is our instant message session as we tried Tru Blood, straight up.

Mel: I’ve heard that ice cold tastes best.
Liz: Yeah, I had mine in the fridge and I’ve added ice.
Mel: I’m drinking mine straight out of the bottle.
Mel: The bottle is so neat, though, I really hate to open it.
Liz: I know, right?
Liz: It’s funny, I poured it into my glass and got about a 2 inch foam top that looked really pretty.
Mel: Red with foam? Perfect for Halloween!

Liz: That’s what I’m thinking.
Liz: I’m using my TB glass that I got at the lounge that night.
Mel: Show off!
Mel: Wait, let me get my hat…
Liz: Oh the hat!!!
Liz: Ah the memories.
Mel: LOL! That James, he was a nice guy.
Liz: He was! And cute!
Mel: Very.
Mel: Ooooh, it makes a glugging sound when you drink out of the bottle.
Liz: I like that it’s sweet but just tart enough to make it refreshing.
Mel: Mmmm…I like it. Fizzy and fruity.
Liz: So, you have eaten a blood orange before, right?
Mel: No. But I’ve eaten an orange orange!
Liz: No? Well, if you ever get the chance, get some. It taste like this drink.
Mel: Yum.
Liz: They served us blood orange juice on the plane to and from Italy.
Liz: I was hooked.
Mel: You know, when I went to England, all we got were microwaved dinners that were kind of mushy. Where was the fresh fruit?!?!
Liz: Erg!
Mel: Meanwhile, it’s been 15 months since I last had soda and this really hits the spot.
Liz: I don’t think there’s any caffeine in this.
Mel: I sure hope it’s caffeine free since it’s almost 9PM.
Liz: LOL!
Mel: Wouldn’t it be a hoot if some day you were on a plane and Tru Blood was a beverage option?
Liz: Oh that would be so funny!
Liz: Did you see them drinking it on CBS?
Mel: Yes! Too funny.
Liz: I loved it!
Mel: I don’t think I can drink all of mine. 99% of what I drink is water; this is really rich!
Liz: Little bits at a time perhaps.
Liz: I’m thirsty so I’ll drink what I have in the glass and keep the rest for tomorrow.
Mel: I wonder if it would make a good slushee. Put a bunch of ice cubes in the blender, pour this over the top and puree.
Liz: Maybe. It would make a great ingredient in a punch.
Liz: With ice cream.
Mel: Or with vodka! Oh, wait…
Liz: (Gasp!) VODKA!!
Mel: I’m thinking a pack of Tru Blood and the season 1 DVDs would be a good gift.
Liz: Mmmmmm! Yes!
Mel: Maybe even for someone besides myself. 😀
Liz: [My daughter] just tried it.
Mel: What did she think?
Liz: She doesn’t like the “sizzles”.
Mel: She’s not a soda drinker?
Liz: She is not a carbonated drink girl. Never was.
Mel: Good for her. Keeps her away from all the chemicals in most soda.
Liz: But if it were juice she’d love it.
Liz: [My son] makes up for what she doesn’t like. LOL
Mel: I think I’ll let [my nephew] try this next time he’s over; he loves orange soda.
Mel: Considering he doesn’t like most foods, I guess that’s a plus!
Liz: Mmm, this is so good with vodka and I’m not a vodka girl.
Mel: I’m not an alcohol girl and I liked that combo.
Liz: I think I’m going to get some of this for New Year’s Eve.
Mel: That would be a neat twist on tradition.
Mel: Have a Truly Bloody New Year.
Liz: I’m doing it!
Mel: Right on!
Liz: Dont you think this would make a nice Christmas drink with something green, like um, mint or something?
Mel: Hmmm…yeah. You could do a punch with it for everyone, then a cocktail of some sort for the adults.
Liz: The color is perfect.
Mel: I’m digging that the bottle is red and the drink itself is kind of a cloudy red so it actually looks like blood in the bottle.
Liz: Yeah!
Mel: Ironic considering I can’t handle the blood on the show. 😛
Liz: Ew!
Liz: The bottle will make a good bud vase.
Liz: A dark red rose.
Mel: OK, I have to see a photo of THAT.
Mel: I don’t know what I’ll do with mine, but it’s way too pretty to toss. Darnit, and I was doing so well about not accumulating True Blood memorabilia!
Liz: LOL! There’s definitely 2 servings in here – maybe 3.
Mel: Good point, there’s more than one serving per bottle.
Liz: Still waiting for that Merlotte’s wine glass.
Mel: Maybe we should get in touch with James about that…
