Letters to Cast and Crew: Till Next Season, Alan Ball

Dear Alan,

Your most devoted fan here once again, to chat about this last season of True Blood. In a word, or two, well done! Not only have you succeeded in creating a series that has smashed record after record for HBO, you’ve also managed to create some of the biggest rivalries in fandom. Team Eric against Team Bill, Team Sam against Team Bill, Team Eric against Team Bill, Team Pam against Team Teacup Humans (they’re a minority, but they have loud voices); there are enough ‘teamsters’ to form a whole new union. And let’s not forget Team True Blood against Team Twilight. It has gotten rough out here!

All in all, I’d say you’ve thrilled most fans of the books by giving us more of a story we already loved, and surprises where we thought there could be none. As for people who have not read the books, guess what many of them will be doing during the hiatus? And even if they don’t ever read the books, the show stands alone, and provides entertainment such as they’ve not really seen before.

Can we talk about the couples of the series? Jessica and Hoyt reminded us of the sweetness of innocents; Tara and Eggs showed us a relationship based on raw need; Eric and Godric showed us unconditional devotion; Sarah and Steve Newlin showed us “the falseness of a worn out relation”; and when teaming up to save their town, Jason and Andy showed us Abbott and Costello meet the Maenad. It doesn’t get any better than that.

We had a snarky queen, a vicious, psychotic wild woman, a very humanistic vampire, a fanatical, unforgiving minister with a wondering wife, and Eric sans pink spandex. (There is a God.) We laughed, we cried, we sighed, all thanks to you, Alan, and the wonderful writing staff you have on board. Maybe the cast had a little to do with it as well. 😉 The sets were beautiful; the costumes, simply lovely. The music took us to many different places.

So how do you top a season like this one? What a challenge for you. I’d like to help, but I’ve got my hands full just trying to organize all these damn teams.

Hopelessly Devoted to Alan Ball,
Liz
