True Blood Guide, Season 1: “Mine” with Commentary from Alan Ball

In episode 3 from season one, Bill lays claims to Sookie as a means of safeguarding her from other vampires; Sam and Tara find escape from their problems in each other’s arms; Jason seeks help from Lafayette.

Alan Ball: At one point HBO asked, “What is the central theme of this show?” I don’t think in those terms. I just think, “Am I entertained? Am I interested? Am I compelled?” Themes are for people who work that way, which is a perfectly valid way of working. I don’t work that way. Maybe it’s for people who are writing papers or thesis about things. But I knew I had to give them an answer they would like. So I said the show is about the terrors of intimacy. And in retrospect, I think that’s kind of true. I mean, certainly when you become intimate with someone, you have to let your guard down and you have to become vulnerable. And knowing that, no matter how much you trust this person, you might end up being really hurt by this. And that’s part of why intimacy is really dangerous and why so many people avoid it. So in that sense, yeah, anytime you open up you’re making yourself vulnerable.

“Mine” was written by Alan Ball and directed by John Dahl. True Blood airs on Wednesday nights at 10 p.m. on Channel 4 in the UK, and on Saturday nights here in the States on HBO2 at 9 p.m.
